New Director of Outpatient and Continuing Care Services Announced
Mathew Lee, M.D., Chairman, and the Howard A. Rusk Professor of Rehabilitation, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jonathan H. Whiteson, M.D., to be the Department’s new Director of Outpatient and Continuing Care Services. Dr. Whiteson’s appointment is effective September 1, 2006.
In this newly created position, Dr. Whiteson will be responsible for the oversight and management of medical services in the following areas: outpatient rehabilitation services, the newly established Rusk Rehabilitation Network, and other post-acute rehabilitation services.
Howard Thistle, M.D., Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, has been the Director of Outpatient Services at Rusk for over 20 years, and has strongly endorsed the appointment of Dr. Whiteson as Director of Outpatient Services and Continuing Care Services at Rusk. Dr. Thistle will continue to serve as Vice Chair and Clinical Director, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Rusk Institute, as well as to assist Dr. Whiteson in the transition to this new responsibility.
Dr. Jonathan Whiteson is a full time Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Rusk Institute. Having graduated from University College Hospital, University of London, in 1989, he completed Residency training in Internal Medicine in London, before moving to New York in 1994. He completed Residency training in Rehabilitation Medicine in 1998, and Fellowship in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in 1999, both at Rusk Institute. He is currently the Medical Director for Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Rusk.
Dr. Whiteson is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. He has published many articles related to cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and continues to actively direct several ongoing research projects at Rusk Institute. He has lectured widely within the United States at national conferences, and has recently been invited to lecture in China and the United Kingdom on cardiac rehabilitation. Dr. Whiteson was invited by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to develop a national self-study curriculum for practicing rehabilitation physicians in the area of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation from 2005 to 2006. He authored the chapter on Cardiac Rehabilitation for ‘Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,’ 3rd Edition, 2006, Randall L. Braddom, M.D.
In addition and amongst other roles and responsibilities, Dr. Whiteson is Co-Chair of the Rusk Quality Assurance Medical Management committee, Chair of the Rusk Institute’s Fundraising Committee, Chair of the Physician Leadership subcommittee for the Rusk Institute Rehabilitation Network as well as a member of the Network’s Steering Committee, and is actively involved in resident and staff educational activities at the Rusk Institute.
