Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine Ranks #1 in New York State According to U.S. News & World Report

US News Best Hospitals 2005

The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine ranks among the nation's top hospitals in the 2005 survey by U.S. News & World Report, a widely recognized industry standard of excellence. The prestigious ranking evaluated 6,007 eligible hospitals in 17 specialties and lists the top 50 in each specialty.

Rusk Institute is the #1 ranked Rehabilitation Hospital in New York State and 8th in the nation this year. Since the U.S. News & World Report rankings were first initiated in 1989, this selection marks the sixteenth consecutive year Rusk was voted first in New York State and one of the top 10 best rehabilitation hospitals in the country.

NYU Medical Center was ranked among the nation's 50 best hospitals in nine other specialty areas: Neurology/Neurosurgery, Rheumatology, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Urology, Orthopaedics, Gynecology, Cancer, and Ear, Nose & Throat. Of all 6,007 U.S. medical centers evaluated (military and veterans' hospitals are not included), just 176 were of high-enough quality to be ranked in even a single specialty this year.

To be ranked in the Rehabilitation specialty, a hospital had to be named by at least 3 percent of board-certified specialists in rehabilitation medicine who answered U.S. News surveys in the past three years. To form the ranking, 200 board-certified rehabilitation specialists this year were selected at random and asked to list up to five hospitals they consider tops in their specialty regardless of cost or location. The score shows the percentage of responding doctors who picked the hospital.

For all specialties together, a total of 3,400 physicians were surveyed this year. Of these, slightly fewer than half responded.
