Funding provided by NIH grants, private foundations and pharmaceutical corporations allows for the study of several major areas, including effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs, agents designed to enhance wound healing, hepatic cirrhosis therapy, angiogenesis and atherosclerosis and new therapies for the treatment of cancer. Research begins in the laboratory with the exploration of issues such as understanding the genetic and metabolic bases for responses to and toxicity of pharmacologically active agents and continues on to explore the influence of those factors which govern the patient's capacity and willingness to comply with pharmacological regimens.
