This paper shows that a plentiful surface protein on granulocytes is the receptor for a major toxin from S. aureus and is critical for the targeting and killing of cells by S. aureus.

GPR15-mediated homing controls immune homeostasis in the large intestine mucosa
Kim SV, Xiang WV, Kwak C, Yang Y, Lin XW, Ota M, Sarpel U, Rifkin DB, Xu R, Littman DR
Science. 2013 June 21; 340 (6139): 1456-9

The large intestine hosts many T cells that can contribute to either enhancing or preventing inflammation. A cell surface receptor, GPR15, was found to control the homing of regulatory T cells to the large intestine. Mice that lacked this receptor had an imbalance of T cells and much greater propensity for intestinal inflammation.

The ubiquitin ligase FBXW7 modulates leukemia-initiating cell activity by regulating MYC stability
King B, Trimarchi T, Reavie L, Xu L, Mullenders J, Ntziachristos P, Aranda-Orgilles B, Perez-Garcia A, Shi J, Vakoc C, Sandy P, Shen SS, Ferrando A, Aifantis I
Cell. 2013 June 20; 153 (7): 1552-66
A key oncogene, MYC, was found not to be degraded in T cell leukemia, implying that the leukemia relies on the oncogene's function. A small molecule that blocks this oncogene's activity sent mouse T cell leukemia into remission, suggesting a potential treatment.

Peripheral elevation of TNF-α leads to early synaptic abnormalities in the mouse somatosensory cortex in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
Yang G, Parkhurst CN, Hayes S, Gan WB
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences U.S.A. 2013 June 18; 110 (25): 10306-11
This study shows that, in a mouse model that resembles multiple sclerosis, the production of the cytokine TNF in the body increases before any symptoms appear. This TNF crosses the blood-brain-barrier and destabilizes synapses in the cortex.

Liston C, Cichon JM, Jeanneteau F, Jia Z, Chao MV, Gan WB
Nature Neuroscience. 2013 June; 16 (6): 698-705
Glucocorticoids are produced excessively under stress, but normally follow a rhythmic cycle. This endogenous process is shown to help motor-skill memory formation and retention, through the controlled creation and maintenance of new synapses.

Taste-independent nutrient selection is mediated by a brain-specific Na+/solute co-transporter in Drosophila
Dus M, Ai M, Suh GS
Nature Neuroscience. 2013 May; 16 (5): 526-8
In food-deprived flies, the nutritional value of sugar can be ascertained without taste differences. This paper shows that a Drosophila gene designated cupcake, which encodes a solute transporter, is key for flies to behave as if they are hungry and choose foods rich in calories.

Zhong S, Malecek K, Johnson LA, Yu Z, Vega-Saenz de Miera E, Darvishian F, McGary K, Huang K, Boyer J, Corse E, Shao Y, Rosenberg SA, Restifo NP, Osman I, Krogsgaard M
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences U.S.A. 2013 April 23; 110 (17): 6973-8
Is it possible to create safe anti-tumor T cells? This paper shows that the T cell receptor's affinity for its ligand in tumor immunity is critical. It needs to be moderate to fight tumors, but cannot be too high, as that induces autoimmune damage.
