Schedule for Prospective Residents

Physicians are accepted for training in this department beginning July 1st of each year. All PGY-2 applications (except those outside the match) must be completed no later than December 1st two years prior to the year of beginning training. (A file is not considered complete until all the necessary documents are received including your Dean's letter.)

Interviews will be arranged after your application has been received and preferably (but not necessarily) after your file is complete. You are therefore advised to apply as early as possible.

Students completing an elective in this department will be interviewed during their elective period. Students who are seriously considering this program for residency are strongly encouraged to spend elective time in this department. Prospective candidates should plan to spend at least one half day for the interview process.

Most PGY-2 appointments are made through the National Residency Match Program. Some appointments are made directly from Internship should an opening exist.

Salary and Benefits

Annual Stipend - stipends for residents are in accord with prevailing standards in the New York City area. In all circumstances, the Department assigns a Post Graduate Year Level (PGY) at the time of acceptance.

Of note:

Vacation policy - four weeks vacation are allowed each year
Medical coverage - Medical and Dental benefits are provided

Educational leave / Conference time - 5 to 10 days annually depending on the year of training

Housing

American Boards of Rehabilitation

Information pertaining to board eligibility can be obtained from Nicholas Walsh, M.D., Executive Secretary-Treasurer, American Board of Rehabilitation Medicine, Suite J, 1A Kahler East, Rochester, Minnesota 55901. We request that residents who are interested in certification correspond with the Secretary so that eligibility status may be expeditiously established.

With rare exception, the American Board of Rehabilitation Medicine requires that foreign physicians participate in a full four year's of training in order to qualify for certification. Training or practice time in foreign countries is usually not credited. Final decision, however, is a prerogative of the Board.

Double Boarding

Residents wishing to qualify for double boarding in both Rehabilitation Medicine and Pediatrics or Internal Medicine, should request information regarding theses combined programs. Candidates seeking double boarding should contact both the American Board of Pediatrics or Internal Medicine and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for details prior to applying to this program.

Post - Graduate Fellowships

A limited number of one year fellowships are available to candidates who have completed a full residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. These are in the area of Pediatrics, Cardaic Rehabilitation, EMG, and Pain and Sports Medicine.
