Residents rotate through Rusk and affiliate hospitals of the department. Rotations include: General in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services; Pediatric rehabilitation; Electrodiagnostic Medicine; Cardiac and Pulmonary rehabilitation; Traumatic Brain Injury rehabilitation; Pain Management; Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

The program is intended to prepare graduates for practice in high level clinical positions, both in- and out-patient, and an academic career in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Graduates have been highly active in establishing academic programs around the country, and in developing successful clinical practices.

Training is provided at four institutions, located on Manhattan's East Side: Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine; The Veterans Administration Hospital; Bellevue Hospital; The Hospital for Joint Diseases - Orthopedic Institute. Our Faculty from all of the institutions brings together leaders in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine, physicians with in-depth clinical, research and teaching experience.

There are a total of 230 in-patient beds and 25 weekly out-patient clinics at all the institutions. Outpatient experience is also gained in Attending Physiatrist's out-patient offices.

There are a total of 39 residents in the training program. On average, 12 residents are accepted each year for PGY-2 positions after completion of one year of training in Internal Medicine or one year of flexible equivalent. Throughout the 3 year training program, residents are provided with increasing patient responsibility to match the extraordinarily broad didactic and clinical experience gained.

Completed applications for the residency program must be received no later than December 1st, two years prior to the year beginning training.

Electives for medical students are available and are highly recommended for those considering residency training in this Department.

Summer Fellowship programs are available to 1st and 2nd year medical students and there is a unique Health Career Opportunity Program for High School seniors and College students.
