Course Title: Rehabilitation Medicine Various
Electives

Description:
Each student will be assigned to an inpatient unit for
a period of four weeks. Students will have the opportunity to gain clinical
experience in the diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with various disabilities
due to such entities as: spinal cord injury, stroke, amputations and head trauma.
In addition to management of the medical care of patients with disabilities,
an understanding of the rehabilitation "team" approach is stressed
in the overall management of such patients.
Students will also rotate through various clinics such as: Pediatric Rehabilitation,
Muscular Dystrophy and spina Bifida as well as BellevueŠs General Rehabilitation
Clinic in order to gain exposure to general outpatient rehabilitation problems.
A portion of each rotation will be spent in the electrodiagnostic laboratories
to provide a background in electromyography nerve conductions and somatosenory
evoked potentials.
Objectives of the Elective:
To gain exposure to the field of physical
medicine and rehabilitation and patient management through daily contact with
in and out patients, topic discussions, case presentations, scheduled lectures
and review of core journal articles pertinent to the filed. Patients with a
wide range of disabilities will be seen, evaluated and treated, both adults
and children.
Key Responsibilities While on Elective:
- Participation in daily morning rounds and patient care with Residents and
Attendings.
- Students will be responsible for following 3-4 in-patients, writing progress
notes and involved in their medical and rehabilitation management.
- Attendance at 3-4 out-patient clinics per week, patient conferences, lectures,
Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Radiology Conference, etc.
- One short oral topic presentation is expected.
