Description:
A clinical elective in Radiation Oncology is offered to students who are interested in cancer care. The elective provides "hands-on" experience in managing patients with malignant disease. Emphasis will be given to the modes of presentation, natural history and alternatives of treatment for the wide variety of malignant diseases treated by the service. Clinical time is spent at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center. The student will be included in the resident oriented teaching conferences and multi-modal conferences with other oncologic specialties. Since this is a clinical specialty, no prior training or interest in mathematics or physics is needed. The student will be afforded a one-to-one teaching relationship with department personnel, and will not be used to provide routine para-professional care. Research opportunities are available for interested students.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will be introduced to the decision-making process used in oncology in general and radiation oncology in particular. This includes evaluation of the patient and his/her disease, including the principles of staging, the role of radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer, mechanisms of delivering radiation, and interaction with other cancer treatment modalities.
Key Responsibilities of the Student While on Elective:
1. Attend assigned conferences and clinics.
2. Evaluate patients and discuss cases with attending physicians.
3. Read assigned material.
Didactic Program:
In addition to the departmental morning conference (7:45 AM, Monday, Radiation Oncology conference room) students will participate in the regularly scheduled teaching sessions, including but not limited to, physics class, journal club, and the Friday didactic lecture series. Students will be provided with the weekly academic schedule by the Chief Resident.
Method of Evaluation:
Discussion of student's performance by attending staff, including degree of participation, interest and ability to perform functions appropriate to the student's level of education. A score of pass, high pass, honors or fail will be assigned, with supplementary comments added as appropriate.
