Description:
This is a survey-type elective utilizing outpatient and inpatient areas and operating rooms of Bellevue Hospital, New York VA Hospitals, and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, as well as self-instructional material. Attendance at all departmental conferences
is encouraged. It is suggested that reading, in any basic ophthalmology text
designed for non-specialists, be done before the elective. The text should
include anatomy, physiology, interpretation of ocular symptoms, and physical
examination of the eye. An introductory pamphlet is given to all students at
orientation.
Objectives of the Elective:
The student should become familiar with
all aspects of ophthalmology including history, the use of diagnostic ophthalmic
instruments, and specific therapeutic modalities.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- The student over time takes on more responsibility for the care and management
of eye patients in the general eye clinic and participate in the specialty
clinics.
- The student is expected to observe ophthalmic surgery.
Didactic Program:
The students participate in introductory lectures
as well as more advanced lectures which are given to the residents.
Method of Evaluation:
Students are evaluated by the residents, the
faculty preceptor and the director of residency training.

Description:
The two-week elective will provide an introduction to
clinical ophthalmology. It will consist of lectures, participation as observer
and practitioner in the general and subspecialty eye clinics, observer of ocular
surgery, and self- teaching slide and videotape series. An introductory pamphlet
is given to all students at orientation.
Objectives of the Elective:
The student should become familiar with
the more common eye diseases as well as a thorough understanding of the normal
eye.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- The student is expected to attend the clinical conferences and didactic
conferences.
- In addition, attendance and participation of the general eye clinic is
required.
Didactic Program:
Introductory lectures on ophthalmology for medical
students is given early in the elective.
Method of Evaluation:
Students are evaluated by the residents, the
faculty preceptor and the director of residency training.
