Description:
The student participates in all activities of the division of
gynecologic oncology, including weekly tumor and departmental conferences
at Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals. There is a weekly seminar with
the course preceptor.
The student attends daily work rounds at Tisch Hospital and is
expected to participate at all gynecologic oncology surgery at the
two hospitals. Readings are assigned for independent study. An informal
short scientific presentation is required at the end of the clerkship.
Objectives of the Elective:
The primary goal of this objective is to expose the student
to the special problems of patients cared for by this sub-discipline
and to the range of services available. The clinical goals include
exposure to the management of abnormal Pap smears, pelvic masses,
abnormal bleeding or other suggestive signs and symptoms of malignant
neoplastic diseases of the female genitalia.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
1. The student is expected to attend scheduled lectures Tuesday
and Friday mornings, amongst others.
2. The student is expected to attend and to be available for planned
surgery throughout the week at Tisch and Tuesday at Bellevue dependent
on scheduling.
Didactic Program:
In addition to the conferences mentioned above, the student
should attend the GYN Tumor Conference on Friday morning
and the didactic lectures given Tuesday morning. Selected reading
assignments will be made.
Method of evaluation:
Students' performance will be evaluated by formal and informal
conferences with attending and resident staff. Students must distribute
an NYU evaluation form to each of the Attendings and the Tisch Gyn
Onc residents. Home school evaluation forms are submitted to the
course preceptor.

Description:
This elective includes antepartum and intrapartum diagnosis of maternal and fetal conditions in high risk pregnancy, electronic monitoring of mother and fetus in labor and intensive care of the parturient and neonate. Experience will be gained in the high risk clinic, labor and delivery and the newborn nurseries at Bellevue Hospital. Weekly conferences are held in Perinatal Medicine, Obstetrics, and Current Research respectively. Prenatal diagnosis, Ultrasonography, Amniocentesis and Fetal Monitoring techniques are emphasized. The student works directly with the house staff and fellows in Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Objectives of the Elective:
The student will understand the principles of prenatal diagnosis
and care of high risk gravidas.

Description
The purpose of this elective is to introduce the student to
clinical and lab research in all aspects of Ob-Gyn including: Reproductive
Science, General Obstetrics, General Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal
Medicine, Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Urogynecology, Ultrasound
and Epidemiology that should ultimately lead to publication of a
paper or formal presentation of the research project at a national
meeting. Participation in benchwork laboratory research, as well
as clinical trials and retrospective studies are available. Experience
will be gained in research design and methodology, laboratory techniques
(if applicable), data collection and statistical testing. The students
work directly with Research Nurses, fellows in Maternal-Fetal Medicine
or Urogynecology or academic faculty members in the department of
Ob-Gyn. Every effort will be made to match the student's interest
with an appropriate faculty member in his/her subspecialty.
Objectives of the Elective
The student will understand the principles of and participate
in laboratory and clinical research projects in the Department of
Ob-Gyn with the goal of producing a publishable manuscript.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective
1. Meet with research mentor on a regular basis to discuss progress.
2. Appropriate literature search and background readings into respective
project.
3. Participation in Research Meetings and attendance in applicable
Department conferences.
4. Independent study.
5. Conscientious data collection.

The student will be evaluated by the project preceptor. No exam
is given, but overall grade is given as a pass/fail based on performance
and dedication to completion of the research project. Home school

This elective includes all aspects of family planning, contraception
and abortion. Experience will be gained in clinics, in the procedure
room and in the operating room at Bellevue Hospital. There is also
opportunity for exposure to counseling at Planned Parenthood, NYC.
Weekly chapter reviews and quizzes will be given, and an abstract
presentation will be expected from each students. The students work
directly with the house staff, the senior health educators and the
attendings in the Reproductive Choice Service.

The student will understand the principles and have a firm
knowledge base in all aspects of family planning, contraception
and abortion.

The student is expected to have done the required reading for his/her

Description
Medical student electives are available, by personal arrangement, in Reproductive Endocrinology. This elective includes attendance at all division conferences and attendance at Bellevue's Reproductive/Endocrinology/Infertility Clinic. The student will attend all fertility surgery cases and rounds on in-patients.
The students should master the evaluation and management of the clinical disorders of Reproductive Endocrinology. In addition, the work-up of the infertile couple will be learned and the various medical and surgical treatments of infertility including in vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies will be mastered.

Description
The purpose of this elective is to introduce the student to
clinical and academic aspects of Urogynecology and Reconstructive
Pelvic Surgery. Each student will participate with members of the
Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery in patient
evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. Students will scrub on all
surgical cases at Tisch and Bellevue Hospitals, make rounds on in-patients
with attendings and fellows and attend clinics. The student will
also participate in the division's academic endeavors (e.g., journal
clubs, didactic lectures) and will present a discussion on an assigned
topic at the conclusion of the rotation. If interested, students
may also participate in on-going faculty research projects.
Objectives of the Elective
The student will understand the principles of the work-up and
treatment of urinary and fecal incontinence, learn pelvic anatomy,
surgical technique, and aspects of a detailed neuro-urogynecologic
pelvic examination.

Title: Cancer Risk Assessment in Women

Description:
This elective exposes students to the principles used in assessing cancer risk in women. Students will be exposed to genetic counseling, screening and prevention strategies specifically in reference to breast, ovarian, endometrial and colon cancers. There will also be one-on-one teaching with the course director, with a focus on the literature that explains why we do what we do. Research projects will also be explored.
Objectives of the Elective:
The primary goal of this objective is to expose the student to the special problems of patients cared for by this sub-discipline and to the range of services available to better enable the student to interview patients, listen to critical family history, take and interpret pedigree, counsel women about genetic disorders and understand the basics of the chromosome analysis of the genetic testing.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
1. The student is expected to follow the schedule as set by Dr. Blank.
Monday: Morning office hours with Dr. Blank at the Cancer Center and then Bellevue Hospital high risk cancer clinic
Tuesday: Tisch Hospital with genetic counselor, Elsa Reich

(on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings when risk reducing surgeries
are performed, the student will be present in the OR and will work with tissue
