Title: Clinical Neurology Ward or Consult Elective
Preceptor: Jonathan Howard, M.D.
Course Code: 05-01-03
Telephone #: 263-3737
Prerequisites: Core Neurology Clerkship
Description:
A four week elective is available in Clinical Neurology at Bellevue Hospital. Students may choose between experience on the inpatient consultation service or as a subintern on the neurology ward. The elective in intended to give medical students an opportunity to build on the skills developed in the core Neurology Clerkship. The emphasis is on neurological localization, diagnosis and management. The student will have a primary assignment on an inpatient unit as well as one regular clinic per week. They will also have an opportunity to attend subspecialty clinics in Epilepsy, Behavioral Neurology, Movement Disorders, Headache and Multiple Sclerosis.
Objectives of the Elective:
The student will participate as an integral member of the neurology team. This involvement allows the students to: (1) build on their basic science and clerkship experience in terms of knowledge and physical examination skills; (2) expand their skills in ambulatory neurology, with an emphasis on neurological problems which they will encounter throughout their career, regardless of specialty; (3) gain knowledge regarding newer treatment modalities and research in the field; (4) explore the option of neurology as a career choice; (5) learn more about sub specialization in neurology.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Function as an integral member of the inpatient neurology team (ward or consults)
- Independently assess patients, present their findings, and begin a plan of care under the supervision of senior residents and attendings.
- Appropriately follow and document their patients' progress.
- Presentation of the neurological patient and demonstration of the neurological examination.
- Appropriate application of neurological and neurophysiological techniques.
- Take evening and night call at reasonable intervals, under the supervision of resident staff.
- Attend assigned clinics.
- Attend and participate in the Department's grand rounds, journal club, neuropathology and neuroradiology lectures, and other regularly scheduled conferences
Didactic Program:
The student will get "hands on" experience with the neurological examination and lumbar punctures. Participation in daily attending and resident work rounds will provide the student with a broad exposure to neurological diseases and management. In clinic, attendings review all patients seen by the student, go over the neurological exam and assist the student in developing a plan of care. The Department has two Academic Days per week with scheduled conferences, journal clubs and grand rounds. These sessions are a rich source of the latest treatments and approaches to the neurological patient. Students are also encouraged to read texts and the current literature and present topics during didactic sessions with the ward attending.
Method of Evaluation:
The student will be evaluated by the ward resident, ward attending and clinic attending.
Scheduling Information:
Months Offered: All Year
Report to: Details will be provided once elective scheduled
Students Per Period: 2 (one student per site)

Course Code: 05-04
Telephone #: 263-3737
Prerequisites: Neurology Core Clerkship
Description:
Medical students will work with the clinical epilepsy/neurophysiology service at the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Activities will include attendance of video-EEG rounds during which students will be introduced to the basics of electroencephalography interpretation and will review video-EEG recorded seizures with the attending and team; participation in epilepsy monitoring unit walk rounds and discussion of patient clinical care; participation in admitting patients to the epilepsy monitoring unit and presenting cases on rounds; observation of intraoperative mapping of seizure foci; observation of both intraoperative and bedside brain stimulation for the mapping of language and motor function; and observation of intracarotid sodium amytal testing (the Wada test) which is used to determine dominance of language and memory functions. Wada tests, intraoperative procedures, and bedside mapping procedures occur sporadically through the week (Monday through Friday), thus exposure to these procedures will vary. Their observation is encouraged and will be offered as procedures available throughout the week.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will gain knowledge of differing seizure types, their cause and treatment with antiepileptic medication and/or surgery. Students will also learn the basic fundamentals of EEG interpretation.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- To attend morning video-EEG review rounds
- To attend daily walk rounds, which follow video-EEG review rounds
- To participate in the admission of patients (perform interview and exam) and present newly admitted patients the following morning on rounds. Students should continue to follow patients throughout their admission.
- To attend epilepsy surgery conference held every Tuesday at 3:30 pm at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.
Didactic Program:
There will be a series of lectures by attendings and/or fellows on various epilepsy and electrophysiology topics throughout the week. All medical students are encouraged to attend. In addition, students are encouraged to attend weekly conferences held every Wednesday at 8 am at the CEC during this elective rotation.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluation is based on input from housestaff, fellow team members, and attendings involved with the student.

Title: Epilepsy Research Elective
Preceptor: Jacqueline French, M.D.
Course Code: 05-05
Telephone#: 263-8853
Prerequisites: None
Description:
For those students interested in pursuing research, an epilepsy research elective is available. Prior to registration for this elective, students are asked to identify an attending
at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CEC), who will act as a mentor during their research block. This mentor may be someone whom you have rotated with previously, or who is involved in an area of research that specifically interests you. The student should meet with their mentor at least one month in advance of the start of this rotation, in order to: (1) devise a novel independent research project, or alternatively (2) identify an already-existing project of interest that the student can participate in. There is a large amount of clinical and basic research currently ongoing at the CEC. Various independent research groups have been organized by investigators’ areas of interest. Examples of active research at the CEC can be accessed at the following website:
http://neurology.med.nyu.edu/residency/clinical-neurophysiology/second-year-fellowship-and-research-opportunities
Completion of a research project may not be possible in a one month time period, however any student interested in continuing unfinished work following the resolution of this research block is strongly encouraged to do so; publication of one’s original work is also highly encouraged. This is not requisite, however, for the rotation.
Students on this rotation will also be asked to select 1-2 epilepsy topics of interest, perform a comprehensive literature review, and present their findings with their mentor at the end of the rotation.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students should identify a mentor and specific research project of interest; become actively involved in the project, and participate in all aspects of its design, including but not limited to: writing an IRB proposal, designing the research protocol, enrolling patients, analyzing retrospective or prospective data, interpreting findings, and publishing ones original work. Students are also asked to fully research 1-2 topics of interest in detail, and present their findings to their mentor at the end of the rotation.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
The student is expected to work diligently, in conjunction with their mentor, to achieve those goals listed above, under “Objective of the Elective”.
Optimal participation in clinical research, as well as thorough investigation and presentation of topics of interest, discussed above.
