Title: Emergency Medicine

Prerequisites: Will only accept medical students for the ER elective who
have completed their core clerkships in Medicine & Surgery prior
to starting the elective.

Description:
The elective in Emergency Medicine
is a "sub-internship" clerkship that will expose the student to the
diverse spectrum of clinical problems encountered in the Emergency Department.
The student will gain experience in the evaluation and treatment of various
acute medical and surgical disorders. The student will also encounter patients
involved with substance abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, and trauma.
In addition to the patient care responsibilities, there are daily lectures
and conferences.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will learn
how to recognize emergencies, take focused histories, and perform relevant
physical examinations in the Emergency Department setting. The student will
also assist in performing a variety of procedures under direct supervision.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Students will have direct patient management responsibility under close
supervision by the attending faculty.
- Mandatory attendance for all activities, including 40 hours of clinical
work per week in the Emergency Department, lectures and conferences.
There is a rotating clinical schedule of days, evenings and nights.
Didactic Program:
At least two hours daily
of lectures, teaching rounds and conferences.
Method of Evaluation:
There are daily evaluation
forms for each clinical shift. Participation in conferences, lectures and rounds
is encouraged. There is a required case presentation at the end of the elective.
Approval for an elective in Emergency Medicine does not guarantee you an
interview spot.

Title: Emergency Medicine -- Research

Prerequisites: Open to all medical students who wish to gain knowledge and experience
of research methods while actively exploring the scientific basis of the
practice of emergency medicine.

Description: This four to twelve week elective
will expose participants to the diverse spectrum of clinical and epidemiologic
investigations being pursued at the Departmental Level. Students will be
given the opportunity to become directly involved in one or more academic
projects related to the practice of Emergency Medicine, its subspecialties
(i.e. Toxicology, Critical Event Preparedness, Pediatric Emergency Medicine,
etc.) and/or the intersection of research in Emergency Medicine and Public
Health. Students will be assigned to a faculty investigator who will direct and
mentor them as they are integrated into the research team. As such, participants will work
independently as well as in small groups (with faculty, house staff, nursing, research
staff, etc.) and will attend journal club and other research related meetings. Students may participate in project design, data collection,
statistical analysis and manuscript preparation.
Goals and Objectives of the Elective: The experience gained through this
effort will enhance the analytical skills necessary for successful medical
practice and will help place subsequent educational experiences into a larger
scientific and public health framework.
This experience will also help students further explore their personal
interests in the specialty of emergency medicine and in a research career.
Key Responsibility of the student while on Elective:
1.
Completion
of work assigned by the Project Investigator and/or Coordinator in a timely and
professional manner.
2.
Attendance
at research related conferences, meetings and lectures.
3.
Punctual
and mandatory attendance throughout the entire period of the elective is expected.
Method of Evaluation: There will be a bi-monthly
evaluation by the Project Investigator or Project Manager.

Title: Medical Toxicology

Prerequisites: Fourth year students only
Description:
Medical toxicologists care for patients suffering from intentional or inadvertent exposure to pharmaceuticals, drugs of abuse, industrial and hazardous materials, environmental chemicals, plant toxins, and animal venoms. The purpose of this elective is: (1) To integrate pharmacology, pathophysiology and clinical medicine, in order to understand the care of poisoned patient (2) To learn how to evaluate and treat common toxic exposures (3) To expose the medical student to the resources and structure of a regional poison control center.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will understand the evaluation of poisoned patients. Students will be able to describe the pharmacology and toxicology of common poisons, understand the use of common antidotes and to describe the function of poison centers.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- To attend all conferences and lectures
- To perform daily follow up poisoned patients (AKA “Call backs”)
- To present articles for Journal Club once during 4 week elective
- Brief presentation (5-10 minute) at the end of the rotation on a topic picked by the student
Didactic Program:
Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri; 8:15 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Emergency Medicine Rounds
Daily 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Toxicology Case Follow-up
Daily 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Toxicology Rounds (Note that start time may change daily and will be posted in NYCPCC every morning at 9AM)
First Thursday of each month @2-4 p.m. Consultant's Conference (A regional gathering of toxicologists presenting unique cases of the month)
All other Thursdays 9:00 a.m. Journal Club
Optional: NYU Emergency Medicine Residency Weekly Wednesday Conference from 8AM-Noon
Method of Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on their performance on rounds, “call backs” and a small individual project.
