Title: Otolaryngology

Description:
Students will actively participate
in all aspects of patient care at their respective hospitals. This will include
daily working rounds, teaching rounds, out-patient clinical experience, in-patient
care and assisting in the operating room. The senior residents and attending
staff will provide supervision and various weekly conferences should be attended.
Experience is provided in head and neck oncology, otology and neurology, pediatric
otolaryngology, endoscopy, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and additional
aspects of general otolaryngology. All students will be taught how to perform
a thorough head and neck examination, including minor endoscopy and the use
of fiberoptic instruments. Management of otolaryngologic emergencies will be
reviewed, including acute upper airway obstructions.
Objectives of the Elective:
The student will
be taught how to perform a thorough physical examination of the head and neck,
including fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation. The management of otolaryngologic
emergencies, especially upper airway obstruction, will be reviewed. The evaluation
of the otolaryngology - head and neck patient with subsequent treatment alternatives
will be discussed.
Key Responsibilities of the Elective:
- The student will attend daily patient working rounds, teaching rounds,
specialty conferences, and out-patient clinics.
- The student's assistance will be required for in-patient care and operating
room procedures.
- The student has the option of observing faculty office practice situations.
Didactic Program:
The student is encouraged
to attend and participate in all departmental conferences: multidisciplinary
head and neck tumor conference, otology conference, facial fracture conference,
mortality-morbidity conference, rhinology conference, grand rounds and journal
club.
Method of Evaluation:
Students are evaluated
by the attending physician staff with the assistance and input from the senior
residents.

Title: Otolaryngology

Description:
A two week elective is offered
to provide students with an introduction to clinical Otolaryngology and Head
and Neck Surgery. Each student spends one week at Bellevue Hospital and one
week at Tisch Hospital. Emphasis is placed on developing the skills to perform
an ear, nose and throat, and head and neck examination, participation in clinic
and in-patient management, and observation of otolaryngologic surgery. Students
will also attend clinical and basic science conferences and have access to
a video library.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will learn
to perform the physical examination of the ears, nose, throat, and neck. They
will be introduced to common otolaryngologic complaints and pathologies by
attending clinics and ward rounds. They will be able to assist in the operating
rooms so they can see the application of their
knowledge of regional anatomy and pathology to the surgical treatment of diseases
of the ears, nose and throat.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Students will attend hospital rounds, head and neck conference, otology
conference, Grand rounds, and the otolaryngology basic science course.
- Attendance at 4 Bellevue clinic sessions, including pediatric otolaryngology
clinic, is required.
- Operating room assignments are made by the Chief Resident.
- Opportunities are readily available to attend office hours with the private
attending staff.
