Title: Dermatology Elective

Description:
During the elective, the student
will be exposed to the many aspects of dermatologic diagnosis and treatment
by actively participating in the ambulatory and inpatient programs. The elective
is conducted in all three departmental services; Skin and Cancer/Tisch Hospital,
Bellevue Hospital and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. There is
an in-depth lecture series and teaching conferences daily. Medical students

Objectives of the Elective:
Students will be
able to properly perform a history and physical examination on patients with
skin diseases. Skin morphology will be mastered and used as a method to generate
a differential diagnosis. Ability to recognize and treat common skin conditions,
and determining when it is appropriate to refer patients to Dermatologists
or other specialists should be mastered by the end of the elective.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Students are assigned to one of two Departmental services: Bellevue Hospital
or the VA Hospital. Students are integral members of the health care team.
Attendance at all clinic sessions is required. ANY absences or late arrivals
to clinic must have prior authorization by the team attending physician.
- As they progress in the elective, students will see patients independently,
performing histories and physical examinations and making therapeutic recommendations
to their assigned resident mentor and/or attending physician.
- Students will always work under the direction of the resident physician
and the attending physicians in the clinic.
- Students are expected to read extensively about their patient's conditions,
not only textbooks, but also journals, to gain an understanding of the pathophysiology
of cutaneous diseases.
- A short, formal presentation is required of all students, proctored by
Dr. Miguel Sanchez.
Didactic Program:
Students will attend and
participate in all Departmental Conferences including Journal Club, Textbook
Review and Grand Rounds. Educational conferences are conducted every morning
from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. and every noon hour. The Bi-Weekly Reader lists all conferences
and didactic sessions in the Department and is available in H-100.
Method of Evaluation:
The team attending and
resident physicians will submit a qualitative evaluation based on the student's
clinical skills, presentations, attitudes, and overall performance. Dr. Miguel Sanchez, Director of Medical Student Electives in Dermatology, will collate
this information and submit the final evaluation to the Dean's office.

Title: Dermatology Research

Description:
This elective is available at
any time. Clinical and basic research programs may be arranged with any of
our faculty.
Objectives of the Elective:
The student, working
with a Departmental faculty mentor, will develop a research plan. Research
activities can be either basic or clinical. It is the intent of the elective
that the student will develop a research design, recognizing the literature
leading up to the questions asked in their study, or in the event of working
on an already initiated ongoing project, fully understand the above mentioned
background and defining their specific role in the investigative activity.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
Full
participation, under the guidance of the Faculty mentor, in all activities
that are essential to the investigative project.
Didactic Program:
To attend all meetings and
conferences that the student and Faculty mentor consider important to the proper
execution of the project as well as to provide a broader understanding of the
basic and clinical investigation.
Method of Evaluation:
Periodic interim discussions,
as well as a summary evaluation, of the student's performance in the research
activities will take place with the Faculty mentor. A summary evaluation will
be forwarded by the Faculty mentor to the Dean's Office.

Title: Clinical Research
In Dermatopharmacology

Description:
This elective allows students
to participate in clinical research relating to dermatology.* Students will
have an opportunity to attend the leg ulcer clinic, psoriasis clinic and other
relevant dermatologic subspecialty clinics, as well as to attend departmental
conferences and journal clubs.
Objectives of the Elective:
The objective of
this elective is to expose students to both clinical research and dermatology.
Current ongoing projects relate to atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, male pattern
baldness and onychomycosis.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Daily attendance is required in the clinical research unit to observe clinical
studies in progress.
- Attendance at daily noon clinical conference, once weekly journal club
and once weekly lecture.
- Students are encouraged to prepare a manuscript, on dermatologic topic
of interest to them under the guidance of the Dermatopharmacology Unit.
Didactic Program:
There are no specific didactics
for students. However, students will have the opportunity to work one on one
with an attending and/or fellow in dermatology.
Method of Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated
based on their interest, work ethic, knowledge gained, quality of the manuscript
and attendance.
