Welcome to the NYU Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. We are extremely pleased that you have an interest in pursuing an elective in our department. Child and adolescent psychiatry is a wonderful and dynamic field filled with outstanding opportunities. Our work is rewarding and provides the unique opportunity to positively affect the lives of children and their families.
We ask that you submit your application approximately three months prior to the requested start date. Because of the large number of applicants for electives in child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU, it may not be possible to meet all requests. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Title: Adolescent In-Patient Psychiatry Elective

Description:
This elective is designed for the student interested in learning about the inpatient psychiatric evaluation and treatment of adolescents from 12 to 17 years of age. The elective student will be exposed to a wide range of adolescent psychopathology. The student participates as part of the multidisciplinary team in the detailed diagnostic evaluation that each adolescent and his or her family receives. The student will gain an understanding of the treatment techniques used with adolescents and their families through closely supervised opportunities to provide patient care, including individual and family therapy. Students will participate in clinical case conferences and diagnostic seminars related to their cases. This teaching unit gives students the opportunity to work closely with the faculty and residents of the NYU Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as residents of the NYU Department of Psychiatry.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will gain clinical knowledge and skills related to the total psychiatric care of the adolescent patient. They will learn diagnostic interviewing techniques, medication and psychotherapeutic treatment strategies, how to work on a multidisciplinary team, how to develop and document treatment plans, how to chart clinical work in the medical record, and how to write clinical reports for referral and aftercare planning.
Key Responsibilities of the Student While on the Elective:
- Follow 3-5 patients and assume primary responsibility for clinical management under house staff and attending physician supervision.
- Attend the NYU Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Grand Rounds weekly (90 minutes).
- Participate in team meetings twice weekly (60-90 minutes).
- Participate in clinical rounds daily with house staff and attending physicians. (60 minutes).
- Attend and participate daily in milieu group programs (60-120 minutes).
- Attend the NYU Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry resident didactics.
- Attend one Furman diagnostic clinic weekly, observing outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry evaluations (120-180 minutes).
- Attend Bellevue Child and Adolescent Psychiatry In-Patient Case Conference held on Thursdays at 2PM (90 minutes).
- When possible, attend the weekly NYU Child Study Center case conference held Fridays at 9AM (120 minutes).
Didactic Program:
In addition to the activities listed above, there will be individual weekly supervision and daily review of clinical work, charting, and case write-ups. Students are provided articles from the clinical and scientific literature of child and adolescent psychiatry.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluation of the student occurs through direct observation and supervisory feedback on a frequent basis. A written evaluation of the elective student's work is completed at the end of the elective.

Title: Child In-Patient Psychiatry Elective

Description:
This elective is designed for the student interested in learning about the inpatient psychiatric evaluation and treatment of children from 2 to 12 years of age. The elective student will be exposed to a wide range of child psychopathology, including disruptive behavior disorders, adjustment disorders, affective disorders, and schizophrenia. This unit, in addition, provides a therapeutic nursery for autistic children, which is a unique learning opportunity for trainees. The student participates as part of the multidisciplinary team in the detailed diagnostic evaluation that each child and his or her family receives. The student will gain an understanding of the treatment techniques used with children and their families through closely supervised opportunities to provide patient care, including individual and family therapy. Students will participate in clinical case conferences and diagnostic seminars related to their cases. This teaching unit gives students the opportunity to work closely with the faculty and residents of the NYU Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as residents of the NYU Department of Psychiatry.

Title: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Elective

Description:
The child and adolescent psychiatry consultation-liaison service is an integral part of the pediatric services at Bellevue Hospital and the NYU Medical Center. The in-patient component occurs on the pediatric wards. The outpatient component occurs within the pediatric out-patient clinics. This service receives over 500 referrals per year for evaluation of children, adolescents, and their families. The child and adolescent psychiatry consultation-liaison service performs evaluations, emphasizes short-term treatment interventions with patients and their families, and facilitates referrals for long-term treatment when needed. The clinical experience is enriched by weekly case conferences and didactic seminars. The elective student will be exposed to a wide range of child psychopathology and will participate in the detailed diagnostic evaluation that each child or adolescent and his or her family receives. The student will gain an understanding of the treatment techniques used with children, adolescents, and their families through closely supervised opportunities to provide patient care, including individual and family therapy. This elective may be full time or half time in combination with selected pediatric outpatient clinic assignments.
Objectives of the Elective:
This elective will introduce students to the developmental issues of infancy and childhood as well as psychopathology in a child and adolescent population. Upon completion, students will have the skills to conduct a psychiatric interview. Students will learn the major diagnostic categories and psychiatric consultation-liaison issues in a pediatric population. In addition, students will learn how to implement medication and psychotherapeutic treatment strategies, how to chart clinical work in the medical record, and how to write clinical reports for referral and aftercare planning.

Title: Children’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program "C-CPEP"

Description:
This elective gives the student the unique opportunity to participate in the evaluation, diagnosis, and the short-term treatment planning for patients in the Bellevue C-CPEP. Under close supervision by the faculty and staff of this service, the student gains experience in interviewing, diagnosing, and managing the acute psychiatric patient. The student sees a very wide range of pathology from adjustment disorders to frank psychoses to complex multisystem illnesses and be exposed to challenges in navigating complex systems of care.
Objectives of the Elective:
The objectives of the elective are as follows: Perform a thorough mental status exam. Differentiate functional from organic disorders. Define and identify common psychotic, affective and characterological disorders. Recognize interaction of substance abuse with other syndromes. Assess dangerous ideation and behavior. Make appropriate disposition decisions. Appropriately utilize medications and recognize major side effects. Demonstrate appropriate use of chemical and physical restraint. Understand and comply with the Mental Hygiene Law.
