Title: Cardiothoracic Surgery

Description:
The student taking the subinternship in cardiovascular surgery becomes part of the surgical team caring for patients undergoing cardiac procedures. Subinterns participate with cardiologists, attending surgeons and a house staff in the evaluation and follow-up of cardiac surgical patients. The experience emphasizes applied cardiopulmonary physiology and diagnostic studies in patient management. A member of the faculty serves as a preceptor for each subintern.
Objectives of the Elective:
This elective is designed to give the students intensive clinical exposure to pre and post-operative management in the ICU and on the floor. In addition, they will acquire first hand knowledge of complex operative procedures by frequent participation in the operating room. They become integral and important members of the team and have "hands-on" experience in the care of the patients.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- The students participate as active members of the team and are involved with morning and evening rounds.
- Students participate in various aspects of patient care (venous and arterial lines, thoracentesis, S/G catheters etc.) in a supervised environment and participate in the management of many critically ill patients in the ICU.
- Various conferences and rounds are held by attendings and fellows and students are required to attend the weekly Teaching Conference at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
Didactic Program:
Daily rounds. Weekly grand rounds and monthly M&M conferences are mandatory.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluations are formulated on observation during the rotation and interaction with the faculty and house staff.

Title: Thoracic Surgery Subinternship

Prerequisites: Surgery & Medicine Clerkships
Description:
The student taking the subinternship in thoracic surgery becomes part of the
surgical team caring for patients with thoracic surgical problems, which includes: esophageal, pulmonary and mediastinal disease. The student will work closely with the attending and the thoracic surgery fellow on the service and share patient care responsibilities with the resident staff.
Objectives of the Elective:
This elective will expose medical students to thoracic surgical patients. Cancer of the lung is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and most students have little exposure to this disease.
Key Responsibilities of the Student While On Elective:
- Students will see patients in the outpatient clinic and take part in the evaluation of these patients.
- Students will follow patients in the hospital and operating room.
- Students will have the opportunity to see post operative patients in the office.
- Students will take part in the bronchoscope and learn how to anesthetize patients.
