MD Clerkship Palette Lottery

As part of your clerkship year at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, you complete clinical rotations in medicine, ambulatory care, general surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry. In addition, you complete two electives (four weeks total).

Clinical rotations are organized into clerkship blocks, which are then grouped into one of 24 different configurations that make up clerkship palettes, or schedules, for completing your training. Clerkship palettes change annually and are determined at the beginning of each academic year.

Scheduling Your Clerkships

To create your clerkship schedule, you take part in an online clerkship palette lottery in your second year using SOLARIS (Student Online Lottery and Registrar Information System). Kerberos ID and password required for login.

You are assigned a lottery number and then rank the available clerkship palettes in order of your preference. Each clerkship palette has a designated number of seats available (indicated next to the palette ID). The total number of seats in the palettes that you rank must add up to your lottery number to ensure that you are assigned a palette in the lottery process. Once you’re assigned a palette, you can access the clerkship palette schedule for the Class of 2026 (graphic or text), or the Class of 2027 (graphic or text), throughout the year to stay up to date with your rotations.

As part of second-year Violet Society mentoring activities, all students participate in one-on-one and small group meetings with a faculty advisor, which includes guidance on scheduling clerkships. You can also access our guide for participating in a clerkship palette lottery.
