Setup Instructions of X-Windows on Windows using WinTerm
1. Prerequisites to this installation
- Winzip
- If you have not already installed keyserver, download
the KeyAccess program and review the instructions
on installing KeyAccess for Windows. The installation step requires that you
have access to a key server.
- telnet
program
- account on a unix box where you can test an X program. The example given
will be for the mcrcr0 server where you must have an account.
2. Go to the general download area of the School of Medicine
3. Download Winterm
- On http://skirball.med.nyu.edu/SoM/
click on Exodus/WebTerm
and you will be in the area where you can choose WebTerm

- Click on the link and you will be asked to save webterm.zip. Choose a place
to save it so you can open it after you are done.

- You will need to have Winzip installed to proceed to the next step.
4. Unpacking and Installing Winterm
- Locate the webterm.zip file you've saved and double click on it to open
it (if you can't open it, you may not have WinZip installed or installed properly;
you can download winzip
from endeavor).
- Your Winzip should display a list of files inside this zip file. Do not
select any of the files. Simply click on the "Extract" button.

- After extracting the files to a desired location, locate the folder "webterm
X" in the folder you have extracted the files. In that folder, locate
"XAdmin" folder. Inside the folder is a setup.exe file

- Double-click on the Setup.exe to start the installation procedure. Note
that you are alerted that this installation requires keyserver. Just click
on ok to acknowledge it. In the mean time, the webterm setup starts.

- You will be given a series of questions. Most are straightforward. Do note
where you will be installing WebTermX. By default it is in C:/Program Files/WebTermX
- Towards the end of the setup process you will be prompted to decide whether
to install "TunnelMate". Say no.

5. Running WebTermX
- Locate the folder where you now have your installed WebTermX (usually C:/Program
Files/WebTermX). Then locate the folder XServer. In it you will find wtx.exe.
That is what you need to run each time you want to start an X session.

- You may want to create a shortcut of this program on your desktop. Right
click on wtx.exe and select "Create Shortcut", then move the shortcut
to the desktop.
- To start the X session, simply double-click on wtx.exe (or the shortcut
if you created it). Nothing seems to have happened except that a new icon,
a wtx icon, appears at the lower right corner of the screen near the clock.
This indicates that the session is running. As long as this icon is on, you
need not start wtx.exe again.
- To run an X program from unix, you need to first telnet into the unix machine.
In this example we have mcrcr0.med.nyu.edu as the unix box to telnet to. Open
QVT/Term or any telnet program you usually use and telnet into mcrcr0.med.nyu.edu.
(You may download QVT/Term
from endeavor.) You need an account, of course. Then you can log in and on
the prompt type the name of the X program. In this example, the program is
SeqLab. You can simply type seqlab
& (the ampersand is to allow you to continue
working on this terminal while seqlab is running).

- After hitting enter, and if the installation process went well, you should
see SeqLab running.

Success!
If you see SeqLab then you've successfully installed WebTermX.
