Setup Instructions of X-Windows on Mac (classic) using eXodus
1. Prerequisites to this installation
- Stuffit Expander
- If you have not already installed keyserver, download
the KeyAccess program and review the instructions
on installing KeyAccess for Windows. The installation step requires that you
have access to a key server.
- telnet
program
- account on a unix box where you can test an X program. The example given
will be for the mcrcr0 server where you must have an account.
2. Go to the general download area of the School of Medicine
3. Download eXodus
- On http://skirball.med.nyu.edu/SoM/
click on Exodus/WebTerm
and you will be in the area where you can choose eXodus

- Click on the link and automatically the download process will start. The
hqx file will be downloaded onto the desktop, and upon completion it will
automatically be expanded into a folder called eXodus.

- After downloading is done you should see these two items on your desktop
somewhere
4. Running eXodus
- Open the eXodus folder on the desktop created after you downloaded eXodus.
In it you will find an executable called Exodus. You can simply launch Exodus
by double clicking it.

- You may want to create an alias to this program on your desktop.
- Once you've launched eXodus, the X-session is open as long as eXodus is
running, and now you can launch any X program from your unix account. If your
X program does not launch from your unix account, be sure that eXodus has
not unexpectedly died, in which case you need to relaunch eXodus.
- To run an X program from unix, you need to first telnet into the unix machine.
In this example we have mcrcr0.med.nyu.edu as the unix box to telnet to. Open
NCSA (or any telnet program you have) and telnet into mcrcr0.med.nyu.edu.
You need an account, of course. Then you can log in and on the prompt type
the name of the X program. In this example, the program is SeqLab. You can
simply type seqlab &
(the ampersand is to allow you to continue working on this terminal
while seqlab is running).

- After hitting enter, and if the installation process went well, you should
see SeqLab running.

Success!
If you see SeqLab then you've successfully installed eXodus.
