Access to E-mail from Ranger
We have stated many times that the RCR is getting out of the e-mail buisness and that our GCG server (Ranger) does not provide e-mail services. However, that does not mean that you can't get access to your e-mail from Ranger.
Many people receive DNA sequences by e-mail. It would be convenient to access those e-mail messages directly from a telnet session on Ranger and save them as text files in your account. Then all you need to do is use the GCG
reformatprogram to turn them into actual sequence files.
We have set up the
pineprogram on Ranger to do exactly that.Pineis set up to connect to the Popmail server (endeavor.med.nyu.edu is the same as popmail.med.nyu.edu), so if you have a popmail account, just type your password to connect.

If you use an e-mail server other than popmail.med.nyu.edu, you will need to get in touch with us to modify your PINE settings.
In order for Pine to work as a file transfer method, you will need to set up your popmail account properly. If you use an IMAP e-mail program (which keeps your mail on the server), then you should just create a folder for DNA sequences. If you use a POP e-mail program, then you must set it up to leave a copy of your mail on the server, and then only copy messages with DNA sequences in them over to Ranger.
Here is an example of the Eudora settings. Note that it has been set to "Leave mail on server" for 2 days; 5 or 10 days might work better for you.

If you set up your mail client to leave mail on the server, then all of your recent mail messages will end up in your "Inbox", which is probably where you will end up when you connect to the mail server with Pine and hit the Return key a few times. It should look something like this:

Use the arrow keys to move to each message that you want to copy into your RCR account and hit the "E" key to "Export" that message and save it as a file.
When you get the message:
EXPORT: Copy message to file in home directory:
you should type in a name for the new file, then hit Return. Repeat this for each mail message that you want to copy to your RCR account, then quit Pine by typing "Q"
