Introduction to SeqLab

*** SeqLab provides a graphical way to work with the GCG program.

*** Instead of typing commands with options, you choose programs from menus and choose options by clicking on check boxes.

*** Results are displayed on screen in a variety of windows - text, graphics, and a multiple sequence editor.

SeqLab

*** SeqLab is a project-based program.

*** All of the sequences and the results produced by the operation of GCG programs on those sequences is stored in a project file.

*** SeqLab has two different user interfaces or modes of operation: Main List mode and Editor mode.

*** The Main List is a list of sequences, list files and multiple alignments in a project.

*** The Editor mode is used to view and manipulate sequences.

*** The Editor displays multiple sequences one per line.

*** Sequences can be viewed as multicolored text or as graphical representations of features.

*** Graphics output generated by GCG programs can be viewed directly in separate windows.

Key features of SeqLab:

*** multiple sequence editor allows direct viewing and editing of alignments generated by PILEUP

*** greatly simplifies the process of selecting groups of sequences or regions within sequences for GCG operations

*** direct viewing of graphics output

*** makes all GCG programs and options available with a mouse click, greatly encourages experimentation with new programs and options

*** emphasizes multiple alignments and features as the focus of work in GCG
