Machine
Source registration
The use of machine sources of radiation is subject to registration of the equipment with the regulatory agency. Machine sources such as X-ray machines, X-ray crystallographic units, and particle accelerators may be used for laboratory research purposes, including animal research, only if the Radiation Safety Officer has registered the unit if necessary and authorized such use. The Radiation Safety Department will review the equipment and the facilities where the equipment is to be used to ensure regulatory compliance and adequacy of shielding. The Radiation Safety Department also makes periodic audits and performs compliance measurements as required by regulation.
Contact: Steven Wagner for further information on the use of machine sources.
Machine sources for clinical diagnosis, therapy or research
Machine sources such as X-ray machines, and particle accelerators may be used for clinical diagnosis, therapy or research only if the Radiation Safety Officer has authorized such use. There are regulatory restrictions on the qualifications and training of physicians and others who may use machine sources for human use purposes. The Radiation Safety Office will advise on each situation and acts as the interface to the various committees and agencies. The Radiation Safety Department has the same oversight and auditing role as for machines used for research, but it also calibrates all diagnostic equipment and performs regular compliance measurements as required by regulations. Calibration of therapy equipment is performed by the clinical service which uses the equipment.
Contact: Steven Wagner for further information on equipment or facilities, or Christopher Marshall on the qualification requirements to use machine sources.
