Training and annual retraining is mandatory for all individuals
who use radioactive material or machine sources of ionizing radiation.
A training program is provided at the NYU Medical Center location
for all staff who use radioactive materials in laboratory research
in any of the New York City locations. Annual training is provided
at the Nelson Institute. Other training programs are provided as
required and on request. Each Department is responsible for ensuring
that training requirements are met and documented. The Radiation
Safety Office issues a number of handbooks which cover the detailed
rules and regulations which apply to the use of radiation sources,
radiation monitoring badges, and other issues, and provides specific
safety data for the radioactive materials which are used in research.
It also has a library of standard radiation safety references.
