Call Responsibilities

First year residents take no independent call until January of their first year, by which time they will have rotated through the general radiology specialties and emergency radiology. They are required to review all cases with senior residents prior to providing consultation. A didactic lecture series in Emergency Room Radiology is given in the first 6 months of the first year.

Second year residents assume call responsibility at Bellevue Hospital and the third year residents at Tisch Hospital . The fourth year residents take "Body Call" which involves the performance and interpretation of emergency ultrasound and CT scans at Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals . The senior residents are always available to provide back-up consultation for the junior residents. An attending is always available for backup as required. All on-call cases are reviewed by an attending and feedback is provided to the residents.

In January of 2003, we opened an Emergency Room Radiology suite in Tisch Hospital. In addition to the on-call resident, a faculty member is assigned to this area thereby providing on-site attending coverage which significantly aids the resident's responsibilities

All studies performed/interpreted by residents on call are reviewed by an attending within 24 hours. A faculty member is always on call to provide consultation.

Residents are on call no more frequently than an average of once a week. The department is in full compliance with New York State 405 Regulations covering House-Staff work hours and residents are therefore free of clinical responsibility on post-call days.
