Resident Evaluations
Residents are evaluated by the supervising faculty at the end of each rotation (i.e. every four weeks). These evaluations become a part of the residents' permanent file.
The residents view their evaluations via a secure intranet application after they complete their rotations. Residents formally review their files with the Program Director at least twice a year, and are encouraged to informally review their progress at more frequent intervals. Additional special sessions are arranged if it becomes evident that a resident is having a problem. The Vice-Chair of Education and the Program Director maintain a close working relationship with the residents and frequently engage in informal conversations which supplement the more formal feedback process.
The department maintains an open door policy under which any resident can meet with the Chairman, Program Director or faculty members at any time to discuss matters of interest. The department strongly believes in close relationship between faculty and residents. Faculty members take great care to offer supportive and objective assessments of the residents’ progress.
Successful completion of training as defined by the annual rotation schedule and performance evaluations submitted by the faculty following each rotation-training block serve as the basis for promotion to higher levels of responsibility and training. The Program Director reviews the faculty rotation evaluations with each resident on a biannual basis, and more often if deemed necessary to provide an opportunity for remedial measures to be taken. The Vice Chair of Education reviews the evaluation of faculty members and rotations completed by the residents and gives this information to the section chiefs and individual faculty members. The Vice-Chair of Education, Program Director and departmental Education Committee also periodically review and discuss resident progress corroboratively.
