Mammography
Fellowship Director: Hildegard K. Toth, M.D.

Rita J. Kaplan Breast Imaging Center
The NYU Department of Radiology offers a one-year Breast Imaging Fellowship with primary clinical responsibilities performed at The Rita J. Kaplan Breast Imaging Center at Bellevue Hospital. To broaden the patient-care base, additional sites of training include the NYU Clinical Cancer Center and The Gouvernor Hospital. This program has graduated over 20 fellowship-trained radiologists, many of whom are in leadership positions at academic centers as well as in private practices throughout the United States. The Breast Imaging Section is currently staffed by 7 full and part-time breast imagers.

Over the course of one year, the fellow will have extensive experience in the interpretation of both screening and diagnostic mammograms. Both full-field digital and analog mammography is available. The dedicated PenRad breast imaging data reporting system is used throughout our sites. This allows for uniformity of tracking statistics and is in keeping with full MQSA compliance.  Adjunctive diagnostic tools are utilized including ultrasound, galactography and MRI. Our fellow fully participates in all image-guided interventional biopsy techniques, including but not limited, to stereotaxis and ultrasound. There is appropriate and ample opportunity to make independent, but confirmed decisions relating to patient management. A well established weekly rad/path/surg interdisciplinary conference provides a forum in which cases are discussed and new literature is presented.

Participation in the Section’s research is strongly encouraged. With the availability of high-field strength MRI, many projects are underway including MRI spectroscopy and motion correction algorithms. Opportunities for CME and teaching are readily available.
