Prerequisites

Applicants are expected to have successfully completed a diagnostic radiology residency, have taken the oral examination of the American Board of Radiology, AND BE LICENSED TO PRACTICE MEDICINE IN NEW YORK STATE.

Overview

The NYU combined abdominal imaging fellowship is an intensive one-year fellowship which will provide the applicant with a comprehensive experience in all aspects of abdominal imaging. The fellowship will enable the applicant to become proficient in all abdominal imaging techniques and interpretations performed on state of the art ultrasound, multi-detector row CT, and MR imaging equipment. The focus of the fellowship is CT and MR imaging. In addition, there is opportunity to learn image guided biopsy and drainage techniques as they are related to the abdomen and pelvis if the applicant so desires.

The NYU Department of Radiology is a Siemens Medical Solutions show site and we are provided with the most up-to-date imaging equipment available. Current equipment at NYU includes 8 MR machines including 2 3T and 1 7T unit. There are 7 MDCT machines including 1 4 row scanner, 5 16 slice scanners, and 1 64 slice scanner. In May 2006 we will have one of the first American dual energy 64 row scanner installed at NYU.

Clinical research is a strong component of the abdominal imaging section at NYU. Fellows are expected to participate in research projects. The fellow will be provided with a member of our staff to serve as a mentor in this endeavor. This relationship should enable the applicant to be a major contributor in a manuscript that will be submitted for publication in the radiology literature.

The NYU experience for our fellows is enhanced by numerous teaching opportunities of the NYU radiology residents. This teaching experience will include daily interactivity on clinical services, back-up to third year residents on call, and prepared lectures to the residents. The fellow will be mentored in presentation skills and the fundamentals of electronic presentation. The fellow’s performance will be continuously monitored to enable constructive feedback in areas where improvement may be offered.

NYU Hospitals

The New York University Abdominal Imaging Fellowship is primarily based at Tisch Hospital with one month CT experience at Bellevue. At NYU we interpret Manhattan VA CT and MR examinations that are sent via a PACS connection.

Bellevue Hospital is a 1200 Bed City Hospital with an extraordinary range of Pathology. This includes trauma, tropical and foreign diseases, HIV, and end stage neoplastic and inflammatory conditions. Several new ultrasound units were recently installed. A Siemens Vision 1.5T MR imager is in place and an Avanto 1.5T scanner will be installed in early 2006. Abdominal cases are performed Wednesday. Currently there are two 4 row multi slice CT scanners at Bellevue.

Tisch Hospital is the university hospital of NYU and is an 800-bed tertiary care center with state of the art equipment and technology. A wide range of inflammatory and neoplastic diseases are treated and imaged at NYU. Many 3D imaging applications are performed including both MR and CT. State of the art abdominal/pelvic and vascular MR imaging are performed in our MR imaging center. The NYU radiology department is known as a leader in the field of virtual colonoscopy and is at the forefront in developing and implementing 3D CT imaging techniques for abdominal and vascular applications.

Curriculum

The abdominal imaging fellowship is designed to give the applicant a broad range of abdominal and pelvic imaging experience with all modalities and with all pathology. However the fellowship will focus on CT and MR and a research project is expected.

The fellowship consists of 13 four-week blocks divided between the two institutions.

These include:

  • 5 blocks of CT (3 at UH* 1-2 at Bellevue)
  • 5 blocks of MR (including vascular)
  • 2 block of US
  • 1 block of elective***

There is some flexibility in the schedule during the elective time that will enable the fellow to maximize potential areas of weakness or further develop areas of interest (e.g. virtual colonoscopy, noninvasive vascular imaging, etc.).

Four weeks of vacation and 1 week for conference are provided if the fellow has a paper accepted at a meeting.

Conferences and Lectures

There are many daily conferences available to the interested fellow including vascular (Tuesday morning 7. Skirball 3), Ultrasound (Dr. Yee and Bennett 7:30 am Bellevue conference room Wednesday morning), MRI physics (Dr. Lee), oncology, and gynecology. During the first month of the fellowship a series of “core” lectures will be given on some of the more common clinical problems that the fellow will encounter in abdominal CT and MR imaging. This will be supplemented by providing lectures on state of the art imaging techniques and updates on oncologic, inflammatory and traumatic processes to the abdomen and pelvis.

The major teaching conference of the fellowship is held every Tuesday afternoon from 5-6:60 PM. During this conference, interesting cases from all abdominal imaging rotations are presented by fellows and residents. The fellow is required to present (or aid in the resident presentation) of all interesting cases from the prior week.

Call

Call has been revised. During the first six months the fellow will be on call once a month. This call will be at Bellevue performing CT and US and also covering the transplant unit at Tisch. While on call, 24/7 attending back-up is always available. During the second six months call may continue like this or be slightly modified.** The relatively light call schedule WILL allow the fellow to concentrate more on research endeavors.
