Abdominal Imaging
Michael Macari, MD, Section Chief
The Abdominal Imaging section is responsible for performing and interpreting all abdominal and pelvic imaging procedures (including abdominal radiographs, gastrointestinal barium procedures, ultrasound, CT, and MR imaging procedures of the abdomen and pelvis) as well as non-invasive CT and MR vascular examinations. NYU is widely recognized as a leader in the development of virtual colonoscopy for the detection and evaluation of colon cancer. The section also shares coverage with the Department of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital Center for the prenatal diagnostic unit.
To ensure the highest quality patient care, we work in close collaboration with colleagues in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, Oncology, and Surgery. An abdominal radiologist is present at NYU’s weekly surgical morbidity and mortality, urology, combined tumor board, vascular surgery, and OB/GYN conferences, where we provide important input into patient care strategies. We also work closely with the Transplant Surgery team to provide anatomical data on potential living-related liver donors.
The Abdominal Imaging section places great emphasis on teaching, and we are proud to report that members of our section have received NYU School of Medicine’s “Radiology Teacher of the Year Award” six times since 1994. In addition to the training of medical students, we are involved in the education of residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. The section offers quarterly a hands-on training course in virtual colonoscopy and several other NYU-sponsored CME abdominal radiology conferences.
Research is a major aspect the Abdominal Imaging section. Our efforts focus on improving and evaluating multi-detector row CT and MR imaging techniques to assist in obtaining diagnostic information.
