The Radiology Education Enterprise:
Initiatives for the 21st Century

By Georgeann McGuinness and Robert I. Grossman

Ongoing faculty education is centered on an internal departmental lecture series, such as clinical and research Grand Rounds and seminars, as well as abundant opportunities, supported by the department, to participate in or attend internal or external Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities. Participation in research and other scholarly pursuits, leadership roles in national and international societies, editorial positions on major journals, and service on National Institutes of Health Study Sections are just a few additional means by which faculty members stay in the forefront of developments in the field.

Recognizing that in the majority of cases career development at the faculty level hinges most intimately on personal career guidance and mentoring, the Radiology Department has organized a formal mentoring program for junior and mid-level faculty. Because the criteria for promotion and tenure in academic medicine are currently in flux, it is essential that the Radiology Department provide a strong supportive structure for each faculty member to attain his or her desired level of professional success. To this end we have challenged our senior faculty and section chiefs to fulfill this responsibility as mentors. All assistant professors, and all tenure track associate professors, have been assigned a mentoring committee, comprising two members of the Radiology Department. Mentoring relationships are established immediately upon assuming faculty positions.
