Departmental Achievements

MARI HAGIWARA, M.D., RECEIVES THE RSNA TRAINEE RESEARCH PRIZE

Mari Hagiwara, M.D., a third-year resident, was honored at the 2005 meeting of the RSNA, where she received the RSNA Trainee Research Prize, awarded to the most promising clinician-scientist in a radiology residency program. Her presentation was entitled “Quantification of Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease Using 3D Perfusion-Weighted MR Imaging: Preliminary Experience.” Dr. Bachir Taouli was her faculty mentor in this research.

STRONG SHOWING BY NYU AT THE NEW YORK ROENTGEN SOCIETY QUIZZES

Rivalries between New York residencies make for lively competition at the New York Roentgen Society Quizzes. Fourth-year resident Allison Levy, M.D., placed first in the November 2005 competition on genitourinary imaging. Hersh Chandarana, M.D., a second-year resident at the time, came in third at the March 2005 competition on neuroradiology, while classmate Phoebe Dann, M.D., placed second in the same competition. Hersh then placed third as a third-year resident in the December 2005 competition on musculoskeletal imaging. In the January 2006 competition on head and neck imaging, fourth-year Chief Resident Nicole Hindman, M.D., came in second, leading second-year resident Phat Ong, M.D., to his impressive third-place finish in the March 2006 competition on cardiac imaging. We are very proud of their diagnostic acumen.

MORTON A. BOSNIAK, M.D., HONORED BY HIS ALMA MATER AS A MASTER TEACHER

Morton A. Bosniak, M.D., an alumnus of the College of Medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, was awarded the Harry Mellins Master Teacher Award in Radiology by the college in May of 2005, in recognition of his enormous contribution to radiology.

THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RADIOLOGY TAPS JILL E. JACOBS, M.D., AS A LEADER IN CARDIAC IMAGING

This year, Jill E. Jacobs, M.D., became a member of the Committee on Cardiac Imaging for the American College of Radiology and was also asked to chair the Committee to Develop a Practice Guideline on Cardiac CT, also under the auspices of the American College of Radiology.

GLYN JOHNSON, PH.D., APPOINTED TO SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM COMMITTEE

The International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine has appointed Glyn Johnson, Ph.D., to serve on the Scientific Program Committee for their Annual Meeting.

CRAIN’S NEW YORK BUSINESS IDENTIFIES VIVIAN LEE, M.D., PH.D., AS A RISING STAR

Crain’s New York, a widely read and respected business journal, in early 2006 chose 40 up-and-comers under the age of 40 from various fields (“40 Under 40: New York’s Rising Stars”). Vivian Lee, M.D., Ph.D., was chosen for her seminal work in MR imaging and the leadership role she plays in radiology research and training.

VIVIAN LEE, M.D., PH.D., HONORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN MEDICINE

At the Clinical MRI Course, held in Miami in May of 2005, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine awarded Vivian Lee, M.D., Ph.D., the Outstanding Teacher Award. In May of the following year, Dr. Lee was further honored by being elected to the Fellowship of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD GOES TO CHRISTOPHER H. MARSHALL, PH.D.

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine in 2005 presented Christopher H. Marshall, Ph.D., the Distinguished Service to Medical Physics Award, recognizing his longstanding contributions to the field.

DAVID P. NAIDICH, M.D., APPOINTED TO THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF CHEST

In 2005, David P. Naidich, M.D., was asked to serve on the Editorial Board of the journal Chest. This is a particular distinction for a radiologist, as the journal has a readership primarily composed of pulmonologists and internists.

HILDEGARD B. TOTH, M.D., ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE METROPOLITAN MAMMOGRAPHY SOCIETY

The Metropolitan Mammography Society in 2005 elected Hildegard B. Toth, M.D., Section Chief of Breast Imaging, as its Society President, acknowledging her leadership position in the local mammography community.

FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH AWARD RECIPIENT: EDWIN Y. WANG, M.D.

The recipient of the Berlex/NER Foundation Fellowship in Basic Science Research in 2006 was Edwin Y. Wang, M.D. This is a highly competitive award which identifies promising young academics and supports research leading to independent funding.
