The Radiology Educational Enterprise:
Initiatives For The 21st Century
As an academic department our educational mission is a fundamental responsibility and core value. This endeavor is led by Georgeann McGuinness, M.D., Vice Chair of Education, and spans medical student, resident, fellow, and continuing postgraduate education (see Radiata Volume 1), as well as faculty development, and mentoring at all levels. The department has invested considerable resources and commitment to craft initiatives which address the demands of radiology education in the twenty-first century. Statement reads:
OUR OBJECTIVE is to produce leaders in clinical practice, teaching, and research.....read full story

Radioimmunotherapy for Breast and Ovarian
Cancer at NYU
The challenge of radiation therapy, from either an external beam or an internal emitter, is to target tumor cells while sparing normal tissue. Radioimmunotherapy, a marriage of radiation therapy and immunology, harnesses the ability to tag radiation to antibodies directed against tumor-specific antigens. The selective attachment of this complex to tumor cells focuses the delivery of radiation to a localized tumor, or allows delivery of radiation to widely disseminated tumors, such as in metastatic disease. Thus, radiolabeled immunoproteins have great promise for treating cancers, and hold the potential for further advances yet to be realized. This technique has already reached the clinic for treatment of low-grade lymphomas, but its application in other areas of oncology, especially the treatment of solid tumors, has been more challenging. At NYU we have been actively engaged in developing radioimmunotherapy for breast and ovarian cancer since 1991.......read full story

Honoring a Giant in Radiology:
Morton A. Bosniak, M.D.
The article that follows this brief introduction is written by one of the true giants of radiology, Morton A. Bosniak, M.D. Dr. Bosniak ranks among the few individuals in radiology whose body of work defines the evolution of the field. The renown of the Abdominal Imaging Section at NYU can be directly traced to his seminal leadership and extraordinary vision.
Dr. Bosniak graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the SUNY Downstate Medical Center College, and then trained in Radiology at Cornell University Medical Center. He began his academic career at the Montefiore Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. During that period he mentored notable individuals such as Seymour Sprayregan, M.D., who became chair of radiology at Montefiore, and Stanley Siegelman, M.D., who, among innumerable accomplishments, brought the journal Radiology to its current status as one of the most highly referenced publications in medicine......read full story

NYU Radiology Information Technology:
They've got I.T. Goin' On
During the many frustrating “down moments” in the radiologist’s average day – while on hold waiting to convey an important finding or waiting to access prior studies for comparison — there is time to dream about the future. Radiologists imagine a time when, at the click of a button, they can read the background of a case, access relevant exams through a digital storage system, look at prior reports or test results, review additional patient information, dictate findings through a voice recognition system, and complete a diagnostic report available for immediate review by the referring clinician. Educators dream of a time when teaching files of interesting cases are accessible to residents from any location, while administrators envision making managerial decisions using customized, data-driven analyses. Researchers imagine a future where, at the click of a button, they can instantaneously retrieve cases that are relevant to their research.......read full story
