The residents and fellows within the Department of Radiology at NYU Medical Center are extremely fortunate to train under and work alongside some of the finest clinical radiologists and scientists in the field. In choosing a career in academic radiology faculty members dedicate a substantial part of their medical practice to resident and fellow education.
Each year the residents single out selected faculty members as exemplary teachers and educators. These individuals are presented with the distinction of “Attending of the Year” at the end-of-year departmental gala.
Below is a brief profile of some of these “award winning” faculty members, to further recognize the efforts for which they have gained the respect and acclaim of their trainees.
Emil Balthazar, M.D.
Professor Emeritus of Radiology
Since joining the NYU faculty in 1980, Dr. Emil Balthazar has demonstrated his tireless commitment to resident education by instructing residents on high-quality fluoroscopic imaging and interpretation. Providing a nurturing environment that stimulates intellectual growth and maturity, Dr. Balthazar succeeds in bringing out the very best in his residents. He is an exceptional teacher and mentor to many NYU trained residents, both past and present. A member of the Abdominal Imaging Section, Dr. Balthazar graduated from medical school in Bucharest, Romania and completed his Radiology residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Joseph Yee, M.D.
Associate Professor of Radiology
Dr. Joseph Yee is a member of the Abdominal Imaging Section with special expertise in all aspects of sonographic imaging. He dedicates a significant part of his practice to providing outstanding resident education. He hosts a well-attended Wednesday morning case conference, provides pre-call lectures on a yearly basis and is rarely seen without a resident at his side. Dr. Yee also serves as attending physician in the Perinatal Diagnostic Unit at Bellevue Hospital on a bi-weekly basis, ensuring that our residents receive excellent training and exposure to interesting cases in obstetrical ultrasound and sonographic women’s imaging. After graduating from the NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Yee left briefly to complete an internship at Albany Medical Center, and then returned to NYU where he went on to complete his Radiology residency and a fellowship in Nuclear Radiology with ultrasound. Dr. Yee became a member of the faculty in 1979.
Michael Macari, M.D.
Associate Professor of Radiology
Dr. Michael Macari, Section Chief of Abdominal Imaging, consistently demonstrates his steadfast commitment to the education of his residents and fellows. He is known for encouraging residents to “make the diagnosis,” and his eagerness to consult with the various referring services to provide the absolute best in patient care. He is similarly known for his efforts to involve residents in the exciting field of radiology research. Several residents, ranging from first-year to fourth-year, are actively engaged in research with him, and many have gone on to present their work at national meetings. Dr. Macari’s positive energy serves as a constant motivational force for continued learning and professional development. A graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Macari completed his Radiology residency at The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center. He has been a member of the NYU faculty since completing his Abdominal Imaging fellowship here in 1997.
Bidyut Pramanik, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Radiology
With a particular interest in head and neck imaging, neuroradiologist Dr. Bidyut Pramanik consistently impresses the residents with his innate ability to present even the most complex material in a clear and concise manner. Always willing to consult on a difficult case, he turns each experience into a valuable lesson by explaining to the residents the clinical significance of their observations. Prior to the change of call pools each year, Dr. Pramanik takes time from his busy schedule to provide case material and lectures to ensure that the residents are prepared for their new responsibilities. He is a tremendous asset to the department and a strong advocate for the residents. Dr. Pramanik received his M.D. from Albany Medical College. Before joining the NYU faculty in 2001, he completed a Neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania after finishing his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at UMDNJ – New Jersey Medical School.
Gwendolyn Hotson, M.D.
Associate Professor of Radiology
A member of the Neuroradiology Section and an NYU faculty member since 1999, Dr. Gwendolyn Hotson is a favorite among the residents for her dedication to teaching and scholarship. Her second-year rotation is consistently rated as one of the most enlightening experiences within the residency and many consider her teachings the foundation of their MRI proficiency. Dr. Hotson continually astounds the residents with her seemingly unlimited knowledge, vast experience, and professional demeanor. She is highly respected by her residents and colleagues. Dr. Hotson is a graduate of the Medical School at Queens University in Ontario, Canada. She completed her Radiology residency and Neuroradiology fellowship at the State University of New York Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn.
Ioannis Vlahos, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Radiology
Dr. Ioannis “Johnny” Vlahos, a member of the Thoracic Imaging Section, is one of the department’s finest teachers. Always willing to help others, he has developed a web site that is devoted to resident teaching. Additionally, Dr. Vlahos hosts a very well-attended, weekly morning tutorial to further the residents’ learning opportunities. From providing valuable feedback with on-call cases to encouraging all to participate in the weekly unknown cases posted on his site, he enables continued learning that the residents all genuinely value. A native of England, Dr. Vlahos graduated from the King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in London. He joined the NYU faculty after completing a Body/Chest fellowship in the Department of Radiology in 2003.
As evident by these profiles, the Department of Radiology is truly fortunate to have so many fine educators. The residents and fellows are infinitely grateful to the faculty members for their leadership and commitment to training us, the radiologists of the future.
