Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship

NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging in the Department of Radiology. Our fellows are radiologists who wish to refine their skills in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal imaging.

Fellowship training takes place at a variety of high-volume environments including NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, and NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, as well as NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

The fellowship is overseen by William Walter, MD, fellowship director, and Steven Daniels, MD, associate fellowship director. For more information contact Nati A. Mejias, program coordinator, at nati.mejias@nyulangone.org.

Musculoskeletal Imaging Training Experience

Our musculoskeletal imaging fellows develop diagnostic expertise in radiographs, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans, and run interventional services including CT-, ultrasound-, and fluoroscopy-guided injections, biopsies, and ablation procedures. Clinical rotations include both diagnostic and interventional rotations at several sites including the historic Bellevue Hospital. They are allotted approximately one academic day per week, which can be used to work on research projects, prepare for weekly internal and interdisciplinary conferences, or other clinical pursuits like observing surgery under the guidance of our colleagues in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Fellows participate in daily side-by-side musculoskeletal imaging interpretation sessions with a member of our world-class expert musculoskeletal radiology faculty. They preview daily cross-sectional diagnostic imaging cases, review them with their attending radiologist, create protocols for scheduled cases, and provide musculoskeletal imaging consultation services for clinicians.

On the interventional procedure rotation, our fellows work with an attending radiologist to perform a wide variety of CT-, ultrasound-, and fluoroscopy-guided procedures including joint and spine injections, arthrography, arthrocentesis, percutaneous biopsies, and tumor ablations. Fellows also field consultations for interventional services from other NYU Langone departments.

As a musculoskeletal fellow, imaging responsibilities and procedural independence are commensurate with the level of ability and increase incrementally as the year progresses.

After-Hours Coverage

Musculoskeletal imaging fellows share responsibility for after-hours coverage, rotating calls on a week-by-week basis. Call responsibilities begin on Monday night and end the following Monday morning. The call fellow is paired with an on-call attending, who is available at all times for consultation.

Musculoskeletal Imaging Conferences

Musculoskeletal imaging fellows attend and present at weekly and monthly conferences on various musculoskeletal imaging topics. Conferences include the following:

  • a weekly interdisciplinary Sarcoma Conference with surgical, radiation, medical oncology, orthopedic surgery, and pathology services in attendance
  • a weekly didactic conference on a variety of intermediate to advanced topics in the musculoskeletal imaging curriculum
  • a weekly Interesting Case Conference, where fellows present cases encountered during the work week to other musculoskeletal imaging fellows and radiologists, followed by group discussion
  • a weekly Hands-On Ultrasound Series, where faculty review the principles of musculoskeletal ultrasound and provide hands-on training and teaching for imaging of the major joints, muscles, and nerves

Musculoskeletal Imaging Teaching Opportunities

Musculoskeletal imaging fellows take on teaching responsibilities for medical students and residents. They also participate in journal clubs to practice critically evaluating research and presenting research findings to groups.

Musculoskeletal Imaging Research Opportunities

Our fellows are encouraged to participate in Department of Radiology research, present musculoskeletal imaging research at scientific meetings, and publish research in imaging journals. We provide infrastructure to support fellows' academic pursuits and allot academic time for fellows to achieve research goals.

How to Apply

All Musculoskeletal Imaging positions have been filled through 2024. We have six openings for the 2025–26 academic year.

We begin accepting applications for the Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship on November 1 and interview applicants beginning in January. We participate in the National Resident Matching Program, also known as The Match. If you are interested in applying, please complete the online application. Required documents must be uploaded directly to the online application portal.

Important dates include the following:

  • The Match opens March 2024
  • Ranking begins in April 2024
  • Match day takes place in June 2024
