Division of Thoracic Imaging

The Division of Thoracic Imaging, part of the Department of Radiology at NYU Langone Health, provides comprehensive advanced imaging techniques for the diagnosis and surveillance of thoracic pathologies, including chronic lung disease, thoracic malignancies, and vascular and thromboembolic diseases, as well as thoracic intervention. Our advanced imaging facilities, research collaborations, and educational programs sustain a dynamic and growth-oriented culture.

Faculty in the Division of Thoracic Imaging participate in interdisciplinary and funded research endeavors, publish in leading medical journals, and present and share this knowledge at national and international meetings. Faculty also serve in leadership positions in the Fleischner Society, the Society of Thoracic Radiology, and multiple regional and national imaging societies.

Thoracic Imaging Education

We provide training in thoracic imaging techniques using advanced imaging technology for residents, fellows, and during radiology training for medical students.

As part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s MD curriculum, medical students have the opportunity to spend time on the radiology service during the radiology selective and a thoracic imaging elective. Medical students observe radiology residents performing preliminary imaging interpretations and take part in formal readout sessions with the attending radiologist.

Participants in our radiology residencies work daily with specialty-trained thoracic imaging radiologists interpreting exams performed at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Perlmutter Cancer Center, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, as well as NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, to develop expertise in interpreting diagnostic imaging studies for the evaluation of an array of thoracic diseases. These one-on-one experiences provide radiology residents with opportunities to review thoracic imaging studies in real time, ask questions and discuss the answers, and develop practical interpretive skills.

We also offer a one-year Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship and a one-year combined Abdominal and Thoracic Imaging Fellowship for radiologists who wish to refine their skills in these subspecialties. Fellows act as mentors for resident cases and coordinates medical student and resident clinical research.

All of our trainees participate in interdisciplinary meetings to gain insight from experts in collaborative clinical specialties to become well-rounded radiologists.

Thoracic Imaging Research

Our thoracic imaging research explores advanced imaging techniques, computer-aided detection and segmentation, CT-guided ultrathin bronchoscopy, volumetric CT data management and manipulation, thoracic MRI, and thoracic interventions. Areas of interest for our research team include dual-energy CT, texture and radiomic analysis, and artificial intelligence applications.

Thoracic Imaging Clinical Services

We work closely with a multidisciplinary team of primary care physicians, pulmonologists, oncologists, pathologists, and thoracic surgeons to offer comprehensive, coordinated thoracic imaging services to NYU Langone patients.

Our services include imaging for lung cancer screening and the treatment of lung cancer and thoracic tumors at NYU Langone’s Lung Cancer Center, part of Perlmutter Cancer Center. We also offer imaging services for airway, breathing, and lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and heart and vascular conditions .
