Three second-year positions at Bellevue are available for
interested interns, as follows:
Chief Intern
Each year an intern is selected from the previous internship class
to serve as Chief Intern. This advanced training is intended to
provide a more in-depth clinical experience. The Chief Intern continues
psychotherapy with selected outpatients and learns to provide supervision
to externs on psychotherapy cases and/or psychodiagnostic evaluations.
The Chief Intern also works closely with the Director of Training
to gain administrative experience, and serves as a liaison between
the internship's needs and the various clinics and service delivery
sites throughout the hospital.
Traumatic Brain Injury Service
This position offers the fellow the opportunity to specialize in
cognitive remediation, neuropsychological assessment and individual
psychotherapy with persons who have sustained head injuries.
Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Forensic and Clinical
Psychology
Introduction
The post-doctoral Fellowship in forensic and clinical psychology is a full time (40+ hours per week), one-year position created to provide additional specialized education for a recent doctoral graduate.
Program Description
The Fellowship’s main components consist of two simultaneous rotations, one primary (Forensic Inpatient Psychiatry Service) and the other secondary (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program). Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) assisting in the coordination and co-supervision of adult inpatient and forensic psychological assessment referrals. Details for a newly created research-oriented fellowship are below.
Bellevue Hospital Forensic Inpatient Ward
Duties on the Forensic Inpatient Psychiatry Service include: (1) conducting psychological assessments and assisting in the coordination of assessment requests; (2) providing assessment supervision for forensic psychology externs; (3) ongoing management of one primary therapy case and supervision of one primary therapy case; (4) assignment to a multidisciplinary treatment team; (5) co-leading/supervising one therapy group with psychology trainees; and (6) providing individual psychotherapy or supervising non-case management psychotherapy for patients on the Forensic Inpatient Psychiatric Service and Forensic Medical Service.
In addition, the Fellow may participate with psychiatry staff in conducting evaluations and psychiatric consultations, and will participate (in a limited capacity) in evaluations of Competency to Stand Trial.
The Fellow assists in coordinating a weekly Forensic Psychology Seminar that has been established to provide didactic training for the forensic psychology interns and externs. Past topics have included dissociative disorders, factitious and somatoform disorders, competency to stand trial, psychological/psychiatric legal defenses, the determination of malingering, risk and dangerousness assessment, inpatient psychopharmacology, pain management, and the role of psychologists within the police department.
Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP)
Duties in CPEP include patient intake and triage and follow-up in the outpatient Crisis Clinic.
Assessment and Supervision on the Forensic Inpatient Service
Assessment coordination involves reviewing testing requests from the Forensic Inpatient Service and assignment to either an intern or extern. The Fellow will also be expected to complete a minimum of 12 psychological assessment batteries, and may select his or her assessment cases from the entire inpatient population, including (but not limited to) the Inpatient Forensic Psychiatry Service.
The Fellow will supervise a substantial number of assessment cases (both forensic and civil) , in addition to short-term psychotherapy and case management supervision.
Didactics
In addition to individual supervision, the Fellow will attend the weekly Forensic Psychology Seminar, and will have the opportunity to attend other presentation on and off the Forensic Service.
New Research Position
Beginning in the 2007-2008 year, a second research-oriented fellowship position will be available. The research fellow’s clinical responsibilities will include, psychological assessment and individual psychotherapy during the course of the year. At least half of the fellow’s time will be devoted to working on existing research projects and/or proposing and conducting original research. Those applying for the research fellowship should submit the application materials described below.
NOTE: In lieu of a treatment summary, applicants for the research-oriented fellowship should submit a proposal (6-10 pages) for a feasible research project to be conducted at NYU/Bellevue Hospital Center during the course of the fellowship. Applicants for the research fellowship must have a strong background in statistics and data analysis, and a demonstrated history of scholarly activities.
Salaray & Benefits
The Fellow will be an employee of Bellevue Hospital Center (Health and Hospital Corporation) at a salary of $33,000 for one year, plus full benefits. This includes 15 vacation days and all Bellevue Hospital Center holidays.
Requirements
By the start of the Fellowship year, the applicant must have completed all academic requirements for the doctoral degree in psychology (including dissertation defense, if required) and successful completed an APA-approved doctoral internship. A strong background in psychological assessment is required.
