Tisch Hospital admits approximately 30,000 patients per year and serves
as a focus for a broad spectrum of highly regarded regional tertiary-care

disorders referred for definitive diagnosis and treatment. The Comprehensive
Epilepsy Center at Tisch Hospital has the largest in-patient continuous
EEG and video monitoring unit on the east coast.
Established in 1736, Bellevue is the oldest public hospital in the United
States and is the flagship hospital of the largest municipal hospital
system in North America. Occupying a 21-story structure adjacent to NYU
Hospitals Center, it is the primary teaching hospital of New York University
School of Medicine. The Department of Psychiatry handles more 100,000
outpatient visits per year including the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency
Program. The Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Health Care
System is a tertiary care facility and the only VA facility in the region
with on-site MRI. It also has active, federally and privately supported
basic and clinical research programs, which include studies of addiction
disorders, HIV, and schizophrenia.
The Hospital for Joint Diseases has an active clinical neurophysiology
evaluation service, a multiple sclerosis care center, and a traumatic
brain injury unit. Lenox Hill Hospital has an active 27-bed inpatient
psychiatric service and the Lenox Hill Outpatient Center for Mental Health
provides residents with additional opportunities to treat patients with
a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. The chief of the outpatient
clinic is a nationally recognized psychiatric expert in traumatic brain
injury. Manhattan and Rockland Psychiatric Centers are fully accredited
state facilities for the chronic care of patients with long term and
persistent mental illness.
