Notes:
Improvement in 25-Item
HAM-D Scores: Buspirone vs Placebo
- Based on preclinical
and clinical findings in depression and anxiety with depressed mood,
a series of controlled trials were undertaken to compare buspirone with
placebo in the treatment of major depression.
- The trials were
multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled with parallel group design
and random assignment to an 8-week treatment.
- Patients included
in the trials were diagnosed with major depression (DSM-III, DSM-IIIR)
and had a minimum HAM-D score >18.
- 183 patients
were treated with buspirone (15 mg/d up to 90 mg/d); 199 patients
were treated with placebo.
- Before treatment
the prominent presenting symptoms were depressed mood, guilt, functional
impairment in daily activities, psychic anxiety, somatic anxiety, and
anergia.
- This slide shows
the response to buspirone treatment rated by reductions in HAM-D item
scores from baseline values.
