Notes:
- The first major
theory regarding the biological etiology of depression posits that depression
results from a deficiency of monoamine neurotransmitters, notably norepinephrine
and 5-HT. Stahl, 1996:112
- Depletion of
neurotransmitters is thought to cause a compensatory up-regulation of
some postsynaptic receptors.
- In the depressed
state, the responsiveness of postsynaptic receptors may be altered,
and 5-HT may be deficient not only at the axon terminal area but also
at the somatodendritic autoreceptors. Stahl, 1996:124.
