Buspirone Augmentation of Antidepressants: Case Holders

Previous Slide

Notes:

Buspirone Augmentation of Antidepressants: Case Histories

  • A number of case histories have been published which show that buspirone potentiates the SSRI fluoxetine and trazodone. Robillard, 1995; Bakish, 1991
  • Three patients who had obsessional traits, symptoms of depressive illness, marked anxiety, and a history of eating disorders and who had prior partial responses to fluoxetine showed dramatic improvement after buspirone addition (30 mg/d).
    • The combination of fluoxetine and buspirone produced very few side effects.
  • Two elderly patients diagnosed with major depression who were taking suboptimal levels of trazodone (100-250 mg qhs; note optimal levels range from 400 to 600 mg qhs) achieved complete remission of symptoms with the addition of buspirone (20 to 30 mg/d).

Bakish, 1991:749-750
