Clinical Problems in Narcissism
A patient
with "borderline pathology" is presented with a view to
understanding the technical and clinical issues that arise with
patients who exhibit more primitive mental states. Here is an opportunity
to look at direct clinical application of the ideas developed in
the course Theory VII.

Scholarly Reading and Writing III

Candidates
get hands-on learning about writing for psychoanalytic journals
by reviewing papers and following the course of a paper, written
by one of the instructors, through the process of journal review,
re-writing and re-editing. The goal is to familiarize the candidate
with the writing and editing process and to begin to prepare them
for analytic authorship.

Candidates'
supervised analyses have progressed, and now a case is discussed
through process in a more advanced phase of treatment. This may
be a return to one of the cases followed earlier.

Development
VI
Adolescence
Reading
List
Using
selected readings and case material, the developmental process is
considered from pre-adolescence through early, middle and late adolescence.
Theory and clinical reality are integrated, with emphasis on biological
determinants, drives, ego aspects and object relations. The consolidation
of character, so important in this phase of life, is discussed,
as well as normality and pathology in adolescence, and how to tell
one from the other.

Creativity
and Symbolism
Reading
List
This
course examines creativity and symbolism from an analytic perspective.
It includes clinical material from the analysis of a creative artist;
theoretical papers on creativity as it is understood by psychoanalysis
and as it enters into the psychoanalytic process; the question of
symbolism, its development and role in psychic life; the application
of psychoanalysis to the arts, how it may be applied and how it
has been applied; and the application of the arts to understanding
psychoanalytic cost of their own work in these areas.

Termination
This
class revolves around clinical presentations of material from the
termination phase of two psychoanalyses, usually presented by advanced
candidates. These cases are discussed with a background of selected
readings about the termination phase of analysis.
