A division of the Adult Psychoanalytic Program
IPE is pleased to offer a two year post-graduate training program in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, designed for psychiatrists,
psychologists, social workers (LCSW's), psychiatric nurses, LMHC's, and other qualified
professionals interested in enhancing their skills in psychoanalytic
psychotherapy. Our aim is to deepen the clinician's understanding
of the patient's emotional life, particularly as it is experienced
in the therapeutic relationship.
The program investigates the mind from the perspective of current psychoanalytic theories of normal and pathological development and function. We explore how individuals acquire the capacity to know and care for others, attain a gender identity, develop standards and ideals, and achieve balance in working, loving, and living during the life cycle. We explore the central roles of development, unconscious processes, and intra-psychic conflict in the formation of personality and psychopathology. The clinical focus is on how these factors influence the psychotherapeutic process.
The core of these programs is a series of seminars, taught by faculty
members of the Adult and the Child & Adolescent Analysis
Sections of the Institute. The instructors are
highly trained analysts with extensive clinical and professional
experience, members of the faculty of NYU School of Medicine. The courses
examine the conceptual underpinnings of psychoanalytic theory and
technique as applied to the psychodynamic psychotherapy of adults,
children and adolescents.
In addition to academic study, training is enriched by ongoing
case conferences and clinical psychotherapy supervision provided
by Institute faculty. The patients are drawn from the clinical practices
of the students. Candidates also need to be currently undergoing
(or have already undergone) their own personal psychodynamic psychotherapy
or psychoanalysis.
Successful completion of the program leads to a certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.
Why Study Psychotherapy at the
Institute for Psychoanalytic Education?
The psychotherapy training program at IPE
is enriched by teachers and supervisors from the Institute who have
undergone rigorous training in psychoanalytic theory, principles
and practice. Candidates benefit not only from their teachers'
and supervisors' extensive backgrounds in psychoanalysis, but also
from a program which is patterned after the Institute's highly effective
psychoanalytic training program.

The psychodynamic psychotherapy training program is a post-graduate
program for individuals who have earned their graduate degrees
in psychiatry, psychology, social work, or psychiatric nursing;
who are licensed and professionally insured; and who are practicing
psychotherapy with adults or children. If you are currently in a psychiatric
residency or in a child psychiatry fellowship, you may be eligible
to begin training.
LMSW's are encouraged to apply for the Prelude to Training program.

Course work
Beginning in September 2012, classes will be held at IPE's beautiful new offices at One Park Avenue South (at 33rd Street), in Manhattan. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings, 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., from mid September to early June. There are three 10-week trimesters, two classes each evening. Most courses involve some assigned reading.
The course of study explores a wide variety of psychopathology. The Technique courses in particular address the ways in which psychodynamic psychotherapy can affect and modify pathologic outcomes of development. Case material is presented by seminar participants, and group discussion makes up a significant component of the learning. The clinical seminars approach the various phases of treatment -- opening, working through and termination.
Supervision
Each candidate schedules one hour per week of supervision with an
Institute faculty member in the first year, and two per week in
the second, at a cost of $50 per session, payable to the supervisor.
The supervisory process is intended to focus intensively on the
ongoing treatment of suitable cases. Candidates write brief annual
case reports, which are discussed with their supervisor.
Personal Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
One's own personal psychotherapy (or psychoanalysis) is a critical part of the education process, and is discussed in the admissions interview. Candidates who have not had psychotherapy undertake this process during their training period, with treatment beginning no later than the end of the first trimester and continuing for the duration of the two year program. Candidates who have already had psychodynamic psychotherapy may be able to waive the requirement. It is not required that one's psychotherapist be affiliated with IPE, but a member of the Psychotherapy Committee reviews the therapist's credentials.
Tuition & Fees
Annual tuition is $2,400, payable in installments. Fees for supervision, $50 per session, are paid directly to the
supervisor. Reduction of fees for both psychotherapy and psychoanalysis,
and for additional supervision, may be requested. Additionally, all candidates will be charged $60 for an annual subscription to the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing database - PEP (waived for candidates with other PEP access).

The course of post-graduate study in the psychodynamic psychotherapy
of adults explores a wide variety of psychopathologic
syndromes. Issues of conflict and deficits in mental function which
are a consequence of biological and developmental determinants are
also explored. The technique courses in particular address the ways
in which psychodynamic psychotherapy can affect and modify pathologic
outcomes of development. Group discussion of individual case material
presented by seminar participants and instructors makes up a significant
component of the learning. The clinical seminars approach the various
phases of treatment - opening, working through and termination -
as case material becomes available.
