Is Fellowship Right For You?
The purpose of the Fellowship program is to provide an accessible
introduction to psychoanalysis. It is suitable for mental health
professionals, who have completed – or are nearing completion
of – psychiatric residencies, doctoral programs in clinical
psychology, or programs in social work with a focus on clinical
practice. Though you need not have a private practice, program participation
requires some familiarity with clinical work. You may, if you wish,
discuss clinical material with your mentor.
There are two components to the Fellowship: a monthly seminar meeting
and a mentoring relationship with a psychoanalyst on our faculty.
Seminar groups meet from 8:30 pm to 10 pm, generally one Monday
evening per month, from September through June. Mentoring meetings
are arranged on an individual basis, with the expectation that these,
too, will occur once per month; days and times can vary with both
parties’ schedules. In assigning mentors, we try – insofar
as possible – to take convenience into account (e.g., if you
live and work on Long Island, we will try to match you with a mentor
on Long Island). However, arranging mentoring meetings will require
some flexibility on your part. Mentors are donating time to this
program – generally in their private offices, in hours they
have open during the day. If you think either seminar attendance
or mentoring meetings will pose an insurmountable scheduling problem,
the Fellowship program may not be appropriate for you.
Please note:
* The Fellowship does not include a supervised clinical component.
• It will not help to prepare you for licensure.
• There is no salary or stipend for Fellows.
We receive applications during the February through June.
You can expect to hear from a member of the Fellowship staff during the summer. If you have questions not addressed by this web
posting, please contact NYUPI’s administrative office at 212-263-6243,
or email us at nyupi@med.nyu.edu.
