Fellowship in Psychoanalysis
(application)
The Psychoanalytic Institute's Fellowship for Clinicians
introduces talented mental health professionals in all disciplines
to psychoanalysis - how analysts think and work - to supplement
their education with a clinically relevant psychoanalytic viewpoint.
The length of the fellowship is one year, and there is no tuition.
The centerpiece of the program is a mentoring relationship with
a practicing analyst. Each Fellow is invited to meet monthly with
an assigned mentor to discuss subjects of interest to the Fellow.
Though mentors may collaborate in choosing topics for discussion,
the choice of content for these meetings is chiefly guided by the
Fellow's interests and needs. Possible topics might include discussion
of a psychotherapy case, research interests, getting started in
practice, or issues in clinical theory and technique (e.g., the
similarities and differences between psychotherapy and psychoanalysis,
or analytic perspectives on related treatment modalities such as
the use of medications, or work with couples and families). These
meetings take place at the faculty member's private office, and
are scheduled at the mutual convenience of each mentor and Fellow.
In addition, Fellows attend a monthly Fellowship seminar meeting.
Seminar meetings provide a general introduction to psychoanalytic
thinking, and also afford an opportunity to discuss topics of particular
interest to current fellows. Recent examples of seminar subjects
include unconscious fantasy, enactment, and the nature of therapeutic
action. Whenever possible, clinical material is used to enhance
didactic discussions. Several seminar meetings are organized around
an analyst's presentation of continuous case material.
Fellows are also encouraged to attend scientific meetings of PANY
and the American Psychoanalytic Association.
