NYUPI was founded as the Downstate
Psychoanalytic Institute in 1949 and moved to NYU Medical Center
in 1979. Its theoretical foundations emphasize the study of classical
psychoanalysis as a developing science which has evolved with ongoing
revisions in theory and technique. NYUPI students explore early
as well as contemporary contributions to the field, paying close
attention to how these contributions are applied to varied clinical
problems. NYUPI is a member institute of the American
Psychoanalytic Association.
Our institute offers the special advantage of being affiliated with
one of the country's foremost medical centers, NYU
Medical Center. The mutually beneficial relationship between NYUPI
and the department of psychiatry in a medical center setting was apparent
from the Institute's inception, and has grown over the years. Institute
Faculty and Candidates are eligible for clinical appointments in the
Department
of Psychiatry at NYU
School of Medicine. Graduates of the Institute have made many contributions
to psychoanalytic theory and practice, and have become prominent psychoanalytic
clinicians, educators, writers and administrators.
While the Institute's primary function has always been to train psychoanalytic
clinicians, its educational functions have evolved to include:
1. Supervision and teaching of psychiatry
residents in the NYU Department of Psychiatry, including the psychoanalytic
track in the NYU
Psychiatry Residency Program. This track allows concurrent residency
and psychoanalytic training for qualified applicants.

2. Teaching in the NYU School of
Medicine behavioral sciences curriculum, including a fourth year
elective in Psychoanalytic Medicine.
3. Outreach programs for mental
health professionals in the greater New York City area, including
the Institute's Training Programs for the Psychotherapy of Adults
and for Children and Adolescents, the Fellowship in Psychoanalysis,
and the Externship Program.
4. Teaching applied psychoanalysis
at NYU's main campus in Washington Square, including colloquia on
psychoanalysis, literature and the arts.
NYU Psychoanalytic Institute is accredited by the Board on Professional
Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Graduates
of the Psychoanalytic Training Program are eligible to apply for
full voting membership, as Active Members, in the American Psychoanalytic
Association, and for certification by its Board on Professional
Standards.
