Program for Medical Education Innovations & Research Faculty Development

NYU Langone’s Program for Medical Education Innovations and Research (PrMEIR) educates faculty about how to best teach, conduct research, and deliver evidence-based, patient-centered healthcare through a variety of faculty development programs, fellowships, and lectureships.

Merrin Master Clinician Fellowship

The Merrin Master Clinician Fellowship is a two-year program for physician–educators who are recognized for their potential as inspiring teachers. The fellowship aims to improve the quality of clinical teaching and the delivery of patient-centered care. Fellows work with leaders in the field of medical education and receive an annual stipend for professional development.

Under the leadership of Mitchell H. Charap, MD, program director, and Michael P. Janjigian, MD, co-director, the fellowship follows a train-the-trainer model to transform how doctors teach and learn and to ensure that there are master teachers and role models for generations to come. By the end of the program, faculty are expected to train peers in their area of expertise and present their work at professional meetings.

Merrin Master Clinician Fellowship appointments are decided by a committee of faculty leaders from the Division of General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation and PrMEIR. For questions about the application process, contact Jeffrey Wilhite, MPH, program manager, at PrMEIRSupport@NYULangone.org.

The Merrin Master Clinician Fellowship was established through the generosity of Edward and Vivian Merrin and the Martinsen Family Foundation.

Murray J. Berenson Distinguished Scholar Program

The Murray J. Berenson Distinguished Scholar Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine provides medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty with the opportunity to engage with leading experts in the field of physician–patient communication.

Each year, we invite a Murray J. Berenson Distinguished Scholar to present at Department of Medicine Grand Rounds, participate in research roundtable discussions, and conduct patient-centered communication workshops with faculty and physicians-in-training. Our goal is to create meaningful dialogue, enhance physician communication skills, and improve patient outcomes through skilled clinical examination.

Established in 2011, this visiting scholar program recognizes alumnus Dr. Murray J. Berenson’s lifelong commitment to compassionate patient care. Dr. Berenson practiced medicine for more than 40 years at St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan.

Strategic Teamwork for Effective Practice Mentor Development Program

The Strategic Teamwork for Effective Practice Mentor Development Program, also called STEP-MDP, helps research staff develop skills to improve team performance, optimize productivity, and promote professional growth among members of their research teams.

Under the leadership of program co-directors Sondra R. Zabar, MD, and Christine Denicola, MA, participants take part in a series of interactive skill-building workshops and learning groups. Topics include being an effective mentor, strengthening team communication, delegating responsibilities, and building relationships with research entities such as institutional review boards and the Sponsored Programs Administration. Participants must take part in all workshops to complete the program.

STEP-MDP has trained more than 100 people and is open to research staff who have a team of 3 or more members. Complete our online application to be considered. For more information, please contact Renee Heller at Renee.Heller@NYUangone.org.
