Dr. Aston is Chief of Molecular Biology at the NYC Dept. Health Biothreat Response Laboratory. This reference lab has the capacity to detect and identify a full range of biological agents and potential biological weapons of mass destruction. The lab tests samples from law enforcement agencies and specimens from clinical sources. The facility has approximately 20,000 square feet of laboratory space, much of it upgraded to Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL-3). The lab is funded through the City's capital budget with additional operating support from a federal bioterrorism readiness and response grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Aston is licensed as a clinical laboratory director by the New York State Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program and a technical laboratory director by the New York State Environmental Laboratory Approval Program.
