Department of Population Health Research

Our wide-ranging research programs employ rigorous methods and draw on diverse partnerships and data sources.

Investigators in NYU Langone’s Department of Population Health conduct research in our healthcare system and in the many communities we partner with. An overarching goal is to investigate relationships at the intersection of health and nonmedical factors to improve health on a broad scale and drive changes that make it easier for people of diverse backgrounds to be healthy in their everyday lives. We rigorously measure and analyze health data from a variety of sources, such as national and community health surveys, electronic health records, and medical claims. We also mine non-health data, such as restaurant and grocery store maps, income inequality measures, and reading proficiency, to get a full picture of the connection between health and social determinants.

Our research methods include monitoring health at the population level, evaluating the effectiveness of various interventions and policies, assisting in the design of randomized controlled trials, analyzing underlying factors associated with health risk, and fostering and measuring behavior change.

We carry out projects with partners from a wide array of public and private sector organizations, as well as across NYU Langone and other NYU schools, and with other academic partners. Our research is funded by the generous support of various government and private funders.
