Faculty Appointment, Promotion & Tenure

Appointment as a faculty member at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, regardless of title or rank, is a mark of distinction and a privilege. As our faculty are entitled to the respect afforded by their appointments, they are also expected to teach and contribute to our community of scholars.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine maintains tenure and nontenure tracks for faculty members in basic science, clinical science, and library. Criteria for appointment, promotion, and tenure are specified in New York University’s faculty handbook. We have also defined NYU Grossman School of Medicine–specific appointment and promotional policies.

The following people are key participants in our appointment, promotion, and tenure processes:

  • the faculty candidate
  • the candidate’s departmental appointment and promotion committee
  • the candidate’s departmental chair
  • referees, who are asked to provide an evaluation of the candidate
  • NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Faculty Records Office
  • NYU Grossman School of Medicine appointment and promotion committee
  • NYU Grossman School of Medicine Dean
  • Executive Vice President for Health at Washington Square

Probationary Period for New Tenure-Eligible Faculty

The probationary period for new tenure-eligible faculty at NYU Grossman School of Medicine may be shortened for those who have worked elsewhere. At least three and a half years of service at a qualifying academic institution, as defined by the Association of American Universities, is considered to be “previous years of service.”

Therefore, for faculty appointed at the assistant professor level with previous years of service, the probationary period is reduced from 10 to 7 years. For faculty appointed at the associate professor level with previous years of service, the probationary period is reduced from five to four years. For faculty appointed at the assistant curator level with previous years of service, the probationary period is reduced from seven to four years. For faculty appointed at the associate curator level with previous years of service, the probationary period is reduced from five to four years.
