Rusk Rehabilitation Research
Faculty members in NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation are dedicated to advancing our understanding of rehabilitation through scientific inquiry. Our innovations and advances set the standard in rehabilitation care for every stage of life and every phase of recovery, and we perpetuate Dr. Howard A. Rusk’s philosophy to be leaders in the field.
Researchers in rehabilitation medicine are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, including a model systems grant to support our departmental initiatives in traumatic brain injury. We maintain active research programs in the following areas:
- aphasia and language
- assistive technology
- biofeedback
- cardiopulmonary conditions
- emotion and brain injury
- eye–hand coordination
- neuropsychology
- swallowing
- stroke
- traumatic brain injury
- vestibular system and balance
- vision integration
We also encourage scientific inquiry among our faculty, as well as residents, fellows, and medical students, who have many opportunities to engage in high-quality translational research. We also offer research training opportunities for students and postdoctoral scholars across our various research programs.
Rusk Rehabilitation Annual Research Symposium
Rusk Rehabilitation hosts an annual research symposium, featuring renowned speakers. In addition to presentations from our research team across disciplines, the Rusk Award for Leadership and Innovation in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is presented.
In 2019, we bestowed this award to Julie Silver, MD, associate professor, associate chair in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women’s, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospitals. Dr. Silver is a leader in shaping rehabilitation medicine’s role in the changing world of healthcare.
Previous recipients include Alberto Esquenazi, MD, chair, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at MossRehab (2015); Bruce Gans, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (2016); Walter Frontera, MD, PhD, chair, University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine (2017); and Michael Boninger, MD, vice chair of research, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Pittsburgh (2018).
