Rehabilitation Residencies for Physicians

NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation offers a three-year residency training program in physical medicine and rehabilitation accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Residents receive a well-balanced, hands-on experience in rehabilitation medicine that prepares them for careers in general physiatry or physiatry subspecialties, academic medical practice, community-based practice, or additional fellowship training. Our program is grounded in Rusk Rehabilitation’s founding principle: to go beyond treating a person’s illness or disability to care for the whole person’s emotional, psychological, and social needs.

Residents gain exposure to inpatient and outpatient settings at our various clinical sites, working with one of the most diverse patient bases in the nation. The core curriculum is organized into a 12-month cycle of core topics on physical medicine and rehabilitation needed to pass the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Part 1 Board Certification Exam.

Once trainees complete the three-year residency, they are eligible to apply to our ACGME-accredited fellowships in brain injury medicine and sports medicine. They are also eligible to apply to the Pain Medicine Fellowship available through the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine.

Resident Lecture Series

We offer lectures every Tuesday from 12:00 to 3:00PM at NYU Langone’s Science Building. Lectures are conducted by Rusk Rehabilitation faculty and experts from other rehabilitation facilities in the New York region, as well as faculty in the Departments of Neurology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Radiology. A committee led by chief residents selects lecturers, assigns relevant readings, and plans the program to align with the 12-month core curriculum.

Grand Rounds

We hold Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Grand Rounds from 12:00 to 1:00PM on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Experts in physical medicine and rehabilitation and related fields update our residents, attendings, therapists, and staff on the latest developments in rehabilitation.

Post-Rounds Discussions and Teaching

After completing morning bedside team rounds, students and residents meet for discussions on musculoskeletal medicine, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, and geriatric medicine. Students and residents learn the scope and practical application of treating and managing both common and rare injuries and conditions. These discussions, guided by attendings, are held at each of our clinical sites.

Journal Club

We meet weekly to critically review recently published articles on physical medicine and rehabilitation to keep up to date on the latest techniques and treatments. Each resident chooses a journal article to present once a year with a supervising faculty mentor. The journal club is held in the 15th floor conference room at NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street from 12:00 to 1:00PM on Fridays and is streamed live to the 5th floor conference room at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

Conferences

Supervised by Lyn D. Weiss, MD, residents present an electromyography (EMG) case and review practice and analysis of this electrodiagnostic medicine technique once a month. Previous topics have included brachial plexopathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, and lumbar plexopathy. We meet in the 15th floor conference room at NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street from 12:00 to 1:00PM on the last Friday of the month. The conference is streamed live to the fifth-floor conference room at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, Bellevue, and the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.
